Is anyone else really concerned over the lack of turnovers not only through the preseason, but the lack thereof that seems inherent in our personnel?

Most of us already know the trials & tribulations of our starters who have been around for years, so I don't see much use in rehashing those beaten horses unless ya'll want to awaken those hee-haw zombies...

But our key additions (Vaccaro & Lewis) weren't known to be ballhawks AT ALL. How many INT's did Lewis get last year?

& w/ us "returning to basics," our LBs will be more focused on tackling & responsibilities than punching the ball out--which can I dig, but that coupled w/ our secondary unable to pick it off...I can't help but see the preseason as a harbinger of trouble in this area.

The only hopeful thoughts I've had on this are big, wild "ifs"
1) PRob finally gets it together & has another 4-pick season
2) Jenkins being able to freelance, no longer being sandbaged by lining up next to Harper every snap.

Someone please disagree & explain why I need to be less cynical. Who Dat!

Keenan Lewis doesn't have that many career picks because he shut his man down, which is just as important as turning the ball over.

We have a DC, unlike last year, who are going to put our players in correct positions to make plays. The turnovers will come as quickly as the players can adapt to the new scheme.

turnovers are nice game changers but, i'm cool as long as they can get off the field on 3rd down consistently.

Given the players we are putting on the field this year, we don't appear to have any ball hawks, including Vacarro (based on his collegiate career).

Now if we get consistent pressure on the QB, then all bets are off. We could create some sack fumbles, and obviously interceptions.

I project the Saints to upgrade in the sack department from 30 to 45. That's a signficant increase.

We had 26 turnovers last year by the defense. I project 28. I hope it's closer to 32. As a point of reference, we had 39 in 2009.

Turnovers are explosive...but we can/did balance that out by holding all 4 teams we played to under 50% on 3rd down and also having a solid # of 3 and outs.

Compare to last year when we were getting the turnovers in preseason/regular season but we couldn't get off the field either.

We'll really be putting it together if we can do both :D

I'm not trying to be contrarian R-Bar, I promise, but I've seen a lot of vids put together by our brothers here on SR, & while he looked good & played w/ vivacity, he hardly looked shut-down. He (to me) held off the long balls but consequently gave up plenty of passes underneath.

Again, I'm not trying to disagree nor am I, in some odd way, pulling for our guys no not do well.

Next years draft will be interesting.

I bet we add another CB or FS who is a ballhawk since jenkins is a free agent, harper is as good as cut given his contract, and greer is getting older.

Ah man but if there is a blue chippy LB there we have GOT to take him. You can't run a 34 D where the LB is the most important position & keep putting it on the poverbial back burner.

Turnovers are pretty big game swingers. We definitely need team turnovers. However, tracking turnovers on the player-by-player level is right next to useless.

A player that gets 8 picks in a single season is more or less an anomaly. That number represents a pick every other game. In most any year, 8 picks would be in the top 5 for the entire league. The math follows that +/- just 2 picks in a season is a 25% statistical deviation.

In other words, unless you are talking a 50-year old NFL Historical record of 14 picks in a season, individual INT numbers are just kind of meaningless.*

Now as a TEAM though, I do think turnovers are an important thing to focus on.

Someone with PFF access need to show the numbers

Turnovers start up front with pressure. You get good pressure, you get the sack/fumble, the hurries, the ints, etc. While I am concerned, field position is my biggest concern.

We had 2 turnovers this preseason. That's about where the league average was. We had opportunities to be near or at the top if not for some unfortunate drops along with the ball bouncing our opponent way. I'm not too concerned with the turnovers just yet. We had the opportunities, we just need to do a better job of capitalizing.

I'd agree with you. Its the hidden yardage mini game that tends to decide games.

An extra position or two a game for us and less for them and we will be just fine.
