USMNT - ‘23 and beyond (3 Viewers)

Yeah, but we’ve already seen GGG doesn’t really do that. I mean, we knew Iran would bunker. No Reyna.
I may be Pollyannaish here, but it’s hard to see ggg going backwards
No mls players over gio or scally
No rigid defensive system
And it’s not just the fans, I don’t think the players will stand for it - they’re not dumb, they know what approaches win - they have no reason to carry water for ussf

We can only hope that all of the controversy and the lack of scoring threat in the WC has caused some introspection and reflection on the on field product.

Just looking at how we played under GGG for the most part, it was a defensive approach with feeding crosses into the middle from the fullbacks. Tuechel-lite Chelsea IMO.

But it’s clear when you put someone with the ball skills of Reyna in the middle, we can dictate the game and score goals from, even with a mostly defensive formation.

IMO opponents were not concerned about our mids, even with dual 8s with the MMA lineup. Everyone just focused on Pulisic. These last two lineups have added a threat to the middle at multiple levels.

Yes to all of that
My only thing is I can’t get my head to go ‘ggg is a complete nimrod,…et al’
Ha made significant mistakes at WC for sure, but it has to have been in response to squad things - not just pulling stuff out of his butt
Like maybe he just saw them as tiny tots - and now he can’t do that anymore- if for no other reason than they’re not going to let him treat them like U18s
Like they’re going to make him their manager not their coach

Yeah, I don’t see GGG as a complete nimrod or failure. We’ve done good things with him. It’s just whether he can adapt and change as a coach to allow the team to continue to improve, or if we’re at the ceiling with him.

Maybe with Callahan being a GGG assistant these couple of games were trial balloons (somewhat out of necessity due to Adams’ injury) to see how the team responded to a more attacking approach. You know GGG had input. Had to have.

I don't see him as a complete nimrod, just another Jim Mora type coach not willing to take the chances necessary to win the big games.....

I think the most obvious blunders with him thus far is really not knowing who his best players actually are, regardless of his philosophy.....Reyna's recent showing should be a total embarrassment to him, 6 months after he wasn't worthy of starting or even playing in WC games he is suddenly, arguably the best player on the pitch?

The only way we play without Reyna in central midfield is if he isn’t available. Otherwise, Berhalter is grudging.

And if I never see Pulisic take a corner again it’ll be too soon. That’s Gios job.

Couldn't agree more on the corner kicks.....love Cap but it's just not his thing....

Question: should we just post USWNT/WC stuff here?
Feels a bit tacky, but I’m not sure there’s enough juice for a separate thread esp since most matches are happening when efil is safely tucked abed
