USMNT - ‘23 and beyond (1 Viewer)

2nd half and ET I thought were pretty good
Canada unwound a bit and that helped, but we played much better

We can't play like we did for 70 min.
If that means Cowell starts or comes on for second 45, but can't leave Jesus up top alone and gotta play wider.

Have to go at defenders and make them make a decision.

On to Panama. I think Cowell has to go from jump. Zendejas and Neal out of the 11.
Agreed. I like dressel too ...crosses really well. If that means Djorgie sits, so be it.

Hercules Gomez made the point that if you're going to play someone like Ferreira up top, you don't want someone like Gressel always crossing the ball in against bigger CBs like Canada has. You'd want Vasquez out there.

I wouldn't mind a Cowell Vasquez Ferreira front 3. Cowell can break down the left on the dribble, Vasquez there for the crosses, and Ferreira crosses well (was even taking corners and free kicks in the second half).

Agreed, but not all crosses have to be flighted. He had a few worm burners that no one got on the end of. His cross game has both attributes.

Unfortunately this game was totally set up for quick, 1 pass attacking play and we didnt do much of that. When we did, we would completely collapse that Canadian defense and someone was open ( we just didnt do a good job of finding them or getting shots off ). It wasnt until Cowell was introduced in the 70th that he would take on first defender, beat him and now Canadian back line had decision to make- either allow him space or close down ( which then leaves the next attacker open ) - they would have to shift across - and if we were quick enough in pass/decision making, 3 taps from left to right would always leave whomever on right wing, wide open.

And aside from Vasquez header, none of our guys were really on target most of the night. Busio had several great looks and flubbed. Shoot, his goal was saved...just St. Clair parried it too hard off own player.

Panama will be another big test for them. After last night, they gots their work cut out to get to finals.

Cowell certainly opened the left, but i thought we were doing better progressing up the right in the 2nd half, we just couldn't connect going from wide to central in the final attack

because they couldnt lose first defender and would pin themselves against touch line- Reynolds, for as well as he has played last 2 games, was not nearly as effective vs Canada. Not sure if that was due to not playing much w/ Gressel, asked to stay back to defend more etc.

What did work was feigning right side attack and switching the ball ( one pass, long ) all the way left since Canada would shift entire defense to right side ( to allow them to switch from player to player to defend quickly ) Just didnt do enough. And for all that Cowell brings, he still lacks some touch on his crosses. But you can live with that when he constantly breaking down a defense into scrambling - one of his valls will eventually make it thru.

My main takeaway from this game is that Cowell give us "another nice problem to have".....he may not start in the WC but if not, he will be great to bring on late.....that is if Berhalter suddenly grows a brain and actually realizes who his best players are.....

id slow down just a tad on this....he has potential, but is super raw. He is going to need vast amounts of playing time to start adding the finishing touches to his game. Learning how to snap a shot when its not the most prudent to do so to avoid that extra dribble or touch to set up shot, allowing defenders to close down.

He can get away with that in U20s...not at top tier levels. His best trait currently is his upper/lower body strength. Its pretty impressive for a 19 yr old. Now go learn how to set up a defender and proper pass/shot technique. ( his shot last night - Vitoria - was sheilding keeper line of sight. He puts either side of Vittoria, and its a goal. HE hit him lol. )

I wouldn't say he is "super raw", I would say inexperienced (which you certainly alluded to), he knows where to be most of the time and I think he changed the flow of the game a bit, with experience in a few years he will still only be 21-22, I think he has a chance to make a real impact in 2026.....
