Vehicle plows into crowd on Bourbon St., with 14 fatalities (29 Viewers)

You know, I'm not sure that it is. The world's always been dangerous ... it's just not supposed to come at us without warning anymore just cos we're in the wrong place at the wrong time. Anyway, that's my perspective.
The scary thing is is that there really isn’t a ‘wrong place’ anymore

There used to be

Wrong side of the tracks, a bad neighborhood, a rough part of town, middle of the night

Now it can be anywhere at anytime

I wonder rot what degree 9/11 (but also Katrina and covid) have pierced whatever veil of invulnerability the US used to have
To say nothing of Twitter, et al, making every danger seem like it’s right Nextdoor

Dug further and his app for perm residency was denied. Doesn't say why. There was mention in other articles of the mosque's history of extremism and his preaching of.

"In 2003, he applied for permanent residency to stay in America as a religious minister. His application was initially approved but revoked four years later by the government, without reason."
Ah. That makes far more sense. Particularly since 9/11.

Seems the mosque had a history of hateful preaching and has since cleaned up it's act.

Pure speculation here, but it's probably likely that the perp was radicalized by a member there, when he was at the lowest point in his life.

I'd say 9-11 and the aftermath with the terror alerts, see something say something etc. had a huge impact

I don't know if the archives go back that far but we talked about here at the time

Social media certainly skyrocketed people's general uneasiness and mistrust

so so so many of the really bad stories we run across stem from young, disaffected men/boys struggling mostly financially but most certainly emotionally/psychologically
we are failing our boys (but also girls)
I mean we're failing our kids

It's really no different than a cult (which some say about any religion but not all religions go after you) who finds you at your lowest ... and therefore most vulnerable ... point and fills you with their promises. "All I have to do to be okay is believe everything you're telling me? Sign me up."

Yep. And gangs.

So what was his connection to NOLA? Why here on NYE?

Supposedly in his manifesto videos or whatever you want to call them he said his original plan was to take out his family and friends but thought that wouldn't properly convey the religious aspect of why he was doing it. If I had to guess he picked the biggest public example of western "infidel" behavior he could find, which just so happened to be down I-10. Pure speculation on my part.

The ones that don't go after you usually just get you when you are born and raise you to believe everything they say. Not sure there is really much difference other than what they tell you to do in the name of the cult.

How crazy would it be if all of these acts of terrorism, mass killings, suicide, etc are caused by AI chat? Something is missing from the equation of their motives. I get that people are evil and anything can set that off. What if though. Maybe AI chat told them to do what they did or how to do it and it is getting buried (bc it will make companies billions otherwise).

Just a thought. Not going down the rabbit hole but it seems AI generated material is thrown around with no check and balances just yet
