Video captures roller coaster support with major crack in it (1 Viewer)

Emergency crews in Oregon rescued 28 people on Friday after they were stuck for about half an hour dangling upside down high on a ride at a century-old amusement park.

Portland fire and rescue said on the social platform X that firefighters worked with engineers at Oaks Park to manually lower the ride, but crews had been preparing to conduct a high-angle rope rescue if necessary. All riders were being evacuated and medically evaluated, and there were no reports of injuries.

One rider with a pre-existing medical condition was taken to a hospital for further evaluation as a precaution, Oaks Amusement Park said in a statement posted on social media. Medics released all other passengers.

The ride, called AtmosFear, operates like a pendulum, with the capacity to swing riders completely upside down.

Chris Ryan and his wife, from nearby Gresham, were at the park for his birthday. He told the Associated Press in a Facebook message that they had just been planning to ride AtmosFear when they saw it was stuck and heard people saying: “Oh my God, they are upside down.”…..

At least rescue is stepping up their game. Only 1/2 hour instead of 3 hrs.
Call me a chicken all you want, I hate roller coasters.

Theme parks are for kids. Never understood how grown ups like going to Disney, or whatever.

Disney and Star Wars.......Doh!

Now a theme park with great live music, gourmet food, booze, and pot, I could possibly make an exception, as long as it was safe.

bc childhood is not something you graduate from
Like onions and parfait life has layers
You add to it, not subtract from it
We should retain a sense of whimsy and glee and (for god’s sake) imagination

So that is Oaks Park here in Portland - it is walking distance from my house and my kid was there that day -

All of PPS middle schools were.

It is a tradition and free for all kids. So mostly it was pre-teens on the thing went it froze.

My HS daughter's friend's dad is Oak's Parks' attorney so I asked him.

Apparently that ride is less than a year old (this I knew) but wasn't out of the ride company's control yet. There are multiple children who suffered strokes and aneurysms but not deaths.

In other words, he's hiring now.

The report said "no injuries reported". I kinda figured that hanging upside down would have triggered something! I don't know if I would survive hanging upside down for that long.

I mean, I've never been a chicken about roller coasters (mostly it started getting to be about getting headaches if I was on one 1 or 7 times); but I'm starting to re-think how safe -- or not -- they are.

Who will never want to go to an amusement park ever again ... if they're smart.

While stationed in Long Beach, me and a few buddies would go to Magic Mountain all the time. I rode every ride they had multiple times, loved it! Now? I'm not sure I would get on the little train ride most parks have.

Yeah I can't imagine those kids getting back on a ride.

It is a shame. Oaks Park is an old school boardwalk with unrigged games, a roller rink and mini go carts.

It's right on the Willamette River (it's pronounced Willamette Dammit!) and is just awesome. The park is free to enter and rides are still cheap. A whole day pass with everything included is like $40. Parking is free too.

I love Disney and Star Wars among other "kid" stuff. Theme parks simply aren't just for kids. There's plenty for adults to do at most parks.

And fwiw, more than a few parks do have live music, gourmet food and depending on the park, booze. Maybe not pot, but hey, you can do that before/after.

To each his own tho. I love building Lego sets, and I'm 53 years old. I enjoy the nostalgia, but that's just me.

How did I say it?

Do they got a carousel? That's the last ride I was on and I had a blast!

For context,

I wanted to add that our kids just finished school on Friday, 6/14 so that might explain if you were wondering why the school was doing it.
Never even entered my mind.

Let's face it, the covid era caused a ton of problems and the one that will hang around forever is the total lack of quality products. They can't even make a decent T shirt, why would an amusement park ride be any different? That and a lack of workforce who care enough to maintain the thing.
It's a real bummer.
