Sure that makes sense for every team every year but based on last year and the caliber of players brought in and the changes in other teams roster, I think one AT THIS POINT, has to be discouraged as the season approaches. What in the heck is Carr and the offense to do with every position group lacking talent or injured? My feeling is we’re looking at a bottom 5-7 team in 2024.

It’s perspective. You can also say that Dc4 statically improved to one of the best QBs in the league over the last 5 games. Isn’t it a what have you done for me lately business? You could say that the D improved via FA. Everyone needs to understand this: If your belief system is coming from the media, then you’ve been fooled. The media people, YouTubers, local beat writers, have to create narratives, to get clicks and views, to earn money to buy themselves groceries and pay their electric bills, and to keep their kids cool inside with AC. So if you were one of these people and required clicks and views, would you say a bunch of bland stuff Or would you try to invoke powerful emotions in your readers such as fear and excitement? I’d probably lean to trying to provoke both of those emotions so that I didn’t appear like a doomsday or a sunshine pumper. It’s all about clicks and views. IOW, develop your own opinion, and let the games play. To make it clear, there are reporters that report the news too. And those types have their own value. For example, John Hendrix, SI, reports play by play from the camp days. No hype just news. So there is value reading the medias reports, but 95% is the aforementioned emotion provoking driven word salads.

and I think this is a choice
There are way too many variables to have any sort of confidence to predict anything- so whether a fan wants to be encouraged or discouraged, they’re choosing that position

I remain confident that that the defense will continue to perform in a top 10 level this year. While we do still IMO have a hole at safety, we have added talent with Chase Young and Gay, along with further depth at CB. This unit should stand out once again. The problem lies with the offense and most positions, most glaringly at OT and OG, and honestly I don't see a fix with the current players there. In addition, WR is going to be an issue if anyone gets hurt for any length of time this year. Lastly, nobody has jumped out to me at RB, save AK, and that could be a huge issue if we cannot run the ball in this offense under Kubiak!
In terms of the season, I think the defense will keep us in most games, but the unknown and concern is if we can field an offense that can score points. I am not so sure at this point that we can do that, thus a 7 - 10 year seems like our ceiling! Hope I am wrong, however...

It’s nearly the same team as last year’s 9-8 team with a new OC and improved positions that we’re overlooking. RT became uncertain while LT got better. Pass rush and LB improved.

A 9-8 team with a better OC (on paper like the other teams’ moves that we’re perceiving to be great) and the same QB, RB, WR, TE, OL and defense doesn’t decline into a bottom 5 team.

Of course you might be right, but mostly I am very surprised that you have something negative to say about the team...

I don’t know, for some reason I seem to think we have one of the most fierce d-lines in a long time going into this year, some outstanding linebackers with the addition of Gay I feel puts our defence over the top.

Then you have a new offense, seemingly a lot more modern with motion to get guys open, sitting with guys like Olave, Sheed, Kamara, Hill and a QB that was hitting his stride to end the season…

I guess I just see this team being a whole hell of a lot better than that. Not only do I think we will win our division but I think we will win a playoff game this year.

Personally this off season has felt refreshing heading into the season, this team can make their own identity and I think they are ready to get back in the playoffs.

Its crazy how the team tried to address the 2 biggest issues that plagued the team last season: offensive scheme/playcaller and OL. And now, the Saints have gotten worse in spite of that??!!? Why didn't Saints just keep Carmichael and overpay Peat again, that would have at least gotten the team back to 9-8. Do some of yall even realize the Saints won 9gms last season??

Yr1: 7-10
Yr2: 9-8
Yr3: ???

They had one of the easiest schedules ever and could only manage 9 wins, that’s not impressive

Easiest based on what

And you do realize the starting quarterback was knocked out of three of those games, right? And that they lost a completely different three games on margins decided by the single flip of a turnover? (ATL-1: lost by 9 on an at-least 10-point flip, the red zone pick-six; HOU: fumbled the INT return, HOU scored a TD, won by 7, Saints had the ball late to tie; JAX: pick-six plus an overturned INT that led to 3 points for JAX in a game they won by 7, Saints had the ball late to tie).

If Klint Kubiak can clean up some of the situational football stuff that Pete Carmichael couldn’t, this team can be on the winning side of more of those close games. Other than the TB game, this team doesn’t get blown out. They’re always in it late, even if it’s that they continued to fight back in and ran out of time. That wasn’t always the case here.

The argument isn’t that it was impressive but that the team, despite some big deficiencies on offense, still managed to have a winning record. So, if it turns out they have made improvements on offense, there’s a reasonable chance this team could improve from a season ago.

Not a prediction, just an observation.

there are a few good teams and a few bad teams. Most are good or bad based on a few random bounces going one way or the other

While I think the defense lacks ballhawks and may be a bit soft up the middle, it's going to be solid to stout and that alone should get a team to .500.

The offense is the wait-and-see. With a new offensive coordinator, I see a lot of growing pains. Hopefully, it will take some time for defenses to adjust to what we're doing different and that will keep us on the plus side. But we won't know how good or bad they are until after the bye.
