Waiting on a head coaching hire can be tough on the fanbase (1 Viewer)

I honestly believe it didn't help that the media was probably full of crap this time around with this coaching search. In '22, they all knew it was DA's job. This time around, nobody knows anything really. I never once bought the Glenn hype, just because Loomis is familiar with someone doesn't mean they were favorites. Now Loomis might eventually hire McCarthy, wanting to interview people vs people being the favorites for the job is where this disconnect happened.

For all we know, Loomis could come out the night the Super Bowl concludes and say Moore was their guy all along and ride the PR wave of "HEY, WE GOT OUR GUY." whilst nobody ever knowing they were ever that high on him. Or, they could hire McCarthy this week and say, "YEP, HE WAS OUR GUY!" No matter who they hire, it will be "this is our guy we wanted all along".

What IS interesting is the money line started changing with odds moving in a very positive direction of Moore on Friday. There was one point where the odds at one website had McCarthy at -200, Brady at -250 and Moore at 500 with Kingsbury at -1200. On Friday, it was Moore at -250, McCarthy at -200.

There are a lot of articles coming out about how the Saints are the least attractive destination for any potential candidates, which is probably the most concerning thing. If we weren't prepared for the process, that's one thing. But if the FO was prepared, and we're just getting turned down by every available candidate, that's less under the org's control and thus a scarier proposition.

I know the apologist don't want to hear this but Mick is in denial about what has happened since Sean left. If Moore turns us down, things could get ugly because Mike may choose to sit out a year. If that happens, Mick has to step down immediate and Gayle needs to step in. I don't think this will happen but it is a possibility.

The thing is, every potential candidate has to know that they're facing a losing situation and a losing season next year. We need to just eat the cap hit next year and recover the year after. If we try to push more down the line, and string out aging vets with salaries unfit to their performance, we're doomed to an inescapable 3 or 4 more years of 5- to 7-win teams.

So yeah, I can totally see how that's not an attractive situation to come into.

The most they could have done was assemble a wishlist. It would appear that they did - and most of the wished-for candidates were coaching teams in the playoffs. That created one delay.

Rizzi, Kafka, and Weaver are the most notable three non-playoff team candidates they interviewed. One of them could have been the coach a week or two ago… but one week ago there was snowfall in New Orleans. No movement in or out of the city for a week. Mother Nature created a delay. I shudder to imagine the social media reaction of this fanbase had the FO hired prior to the snowstorm, having taken 0 in-person interviews with coaching candidates still in the playoffs. No Glenn, no Brady, no Moore, which… Glenn took a job with the team that drafted him, and Brady wants to stay put in Buffalo… but imagine the reactions if, in the name of “hiring fast,” the Saints had shut the door on them all first?

Mike McCarthy was a surprise when he came available. Went from “probably staying in Dallas” to “couldn’t agree on the terms” unexpectedly, and the Saints began exploring interest in him. The team is doing their due diligence on a coach with a strong pedigree, but that’s not good enough for the fans either. “Why didn’t you just hire him already, Mickey?” goes the refrain.

What I’m led to conclude is that the fanbase wants the next coach to be Sean Payton, but the decade-plus experienced version of him, who both must be younger than Payton was when he was hired and also already have the advanced pedigree of Payton, and he cannot go through any of the growing pains every young coach experiences, he has to win 10 games and that has to be good enough to land a first-round bye in the playoffs even though there is only one bye now, he has to be prescient enough to know that his week 1 starting quarterback will be an NFL Hall-of-Famer, and if he doesn’t meet even one fan’s standards he’ll be hearing calls to fire him faster than you can say Rashid Shaheed jet sweep to the house.

Good luck to that man.
I think you're spot on. It seems that for a lot of fans who gets hired is as important to them as the results of their biopsy would be.

I want the Saints to do well and win, but it's low on my list of priorities in life. I would trade the Saints never winning another game to get back my closest friend that died unexpectedly in November the morning after I talked to her. I'm not sharing that to get sympathy. I'm just sharing it to give some perspective on priorities.

It's not healthy to stay so upset and angry about things we can't control. It's soul crushing and life sucking.

One of my closest friends was found dead in the days after the NFCCG no-call. She couldn’t tell you what color a football was but her passing moved me out of anger over that and into a sadness I’ve been fortunate enough to rarely visit, but one I definitely know. Our friend circle needed each other and moaning over the game just stopped mattering.
