Was the Payton Vilma talk just a smokescreen? (3 Viewers)

Maybe talking Vilma up to trade him to the Rams/Titans, or just generally misdirecting?

To my eyes Vilma has been poor for the last couple of years due to injuries, distractions and possibly age.

He looks too small to play ILB in a 3-4 and too slow and too small to be an OLB.

I'm no expert of course but I just don't like the idea of holding onto to a guy who looks to be in terminal decline.

Sam Mills was small also and look how he did in the 4-3. Pretty good i would say.

In order to be an offensive coordinator, you certainly will know about all the defenses (looks), because that's what you are gameplanning against from week to week. Payton probably assists the D-Cord with the D gameplan, looks at a little offensive film, but there is no way he is studying the opposing teams offensive snap's film like he is their defensive films. Payton may not be able to coach the defensive positions, but he I am positive he knows defenses and what each role player does in said defense.

Vilma isn't going anywhere. Now, if Will Smith is still here next year we are in trouble.

I still feel like we dont keep Vilma...now Payton wants Ryan to coach to the strengths on the players on the roster those current and future, but I think with Vilma, Loftona and Hawthorne I feel like that gives us the least athletic unit and keeps a talented player in Wilson off the field or only playing in packages. I think Hawthorne is better suited in the middle and we need to concentrate on getting more athletic at the OLB spots.

The Saints never really valued the linebacker postion which is why they signed a guy who was more of a jack of all trades in Hawthorne who can play all three positions but is a more of a thumper than side line to side line player at 6'0 246lbs. J.Vilma will probably be healthy come Training camp but I dont think his impact is worth us tailering it hide the fact he wont take on blocks very well in a 3-4 and offenses will find a way to take advantage of that in the run game no matter if we run an Under front..we have two down hill run defenders in Lofton and Hawthorne.

you've lost your mind if you think Vilma and Gregg Williams would reunite & that Vilma would play for Gregg.

If I'd said a month ago that Gregg Williams would be reinstated and working for the Titans with a goatee beard and a David Bowie haircut you'd have said I've lost my mind!

One of Payton's faults with this defense is that he has been too loyal the past few seasons to declining defensive players like Smith, Vilma, and Harper. He needs to let all 3 go and rebuild a legitimate defense with players that are on the rise. Leadership is only successful with talent.

The 9:15 mark will tell you all you need to know.

Be careful. As you can see, speaking the truth here can sometimes be unpopular.

Payton wants Vilma to take a paycut so he talks him up and states how he has a role on this team. Pretty genius IMO and I expect Vilma to restructure his deal

Someone correct if I'm wrong, but i thought Vilma can't restructure because its his last year under contract?

Are you really that scared? I would have thought last years defense would have desensitized you to any fear regarding our defense this year. It's not like it could be any worse.

I'm just looking forward to seeing what hits the field. With or without Vilma. :9:

Me too. I truly want to see what Ryan can do starting from ground zero, which is basically the talent level he inherits. It is truly worse than an expansion team. If he can somehow get this defense, allowing that we draft well and make a key signing or two, into even the upper 20's it will be a masterful job. I think if we put aside our distaste for GW we must marvel at what he accomplished with this collection of "talent".
