For the lack of anything interesting happening this morning and to cure my boredom , I'd like to speculate on what exactly Mickey intends to do here. He acknowledges that TQS is a free agent and that Deontay Harris is a restricted free agent as well. Loomis also commented on how difficult it is to grab a sought after QB being in the back half of the draft , saying it's " very expensive " to move up for a guy they like. For what it's worth he was also grinning ear to ear when talking about Jameis Winston being an "option " which I digested differently watching myself rather than reading the quote in black and white.

SO , here's my take on what was said , and what we've seen from that group last year.

1. TQS is gone

2. We very well may double dip early in the draft for multiple difference makers at WR. It may be Treylon Burks early and stealing a Jameson Williams. There's multiple guys with size speed and explosion this year. What a year to need a WR.

3. If Harris is gone , Olave will be the pick. If Harris stays , we'll gun for a guy like Treylon Burks. Mickey may value having a guy more like Thomas who's sturdy in case Mike isn't himself or can't shake the bug.

Bonus !!!

I'm going to guarantee that we will score more points this season than we did last year, and if we do , we walk over the NFC south rather convincingly as we should.

I could see taking two WRs in the draft if the value is there and we don't pick up a guy in free agency.

I usually trust the coaches and front office, but I think we can all agree that it's time we do more than dirt cheap former bust reclamation projects and diamond in the rough UDFA hail-mary hopeful prospects. Whoever our QB ends up being is going to need weapons that can win consistently at the NFL level.

But... a huge part of me still thinks we won't take a receiver in the first round. A more likely scenario in my mind anyway is that we take a WR and a TE in rounds 2, 3, or 4.

I can see them taking Olave at #18 and David Bell if he keeps falling after his 40 times.

I'm glad you brought up ML's facial expressions. I listened to this on YT while reading another site and it just sounded like a normal answer, then I went back and watched it. You might be onto something as ML had zero poker face when discussing the QB topic and Winston.

1. Agreed. TQS has had more than his fair share of opportunities to separate himself. I definitely think the Saints can do a lot better than him as a #4 option.

2. Agreed. I expect to see the Saints take multiple WRs. This draft is rich and deep and grabbing two will secure the WR room for hopefully a decade.

3. Olave won't make it to #18 with the Combine he's had. A guy to keep an eye on is Christian Watson. He has an insane RAS score and solid hands. Ever since Ireland showed up, RAS is a major factor in the Saints draft. There was a poster here, I wish I could remember who, who predicted Turner, Werner, AND Adebo just from RAS scores. The only other WR with a higher RAS than Watson was Megatron. It is obvious the Saints dont mind drafting a player who is rough around the edges if their RAS is ridiculous, and Watson's RAS is every bit as ridiculous as you could dream of. Before the Combine, Watson was originally projected as a late third/early fourth round pick. Now? I absolutely could see the Saints taking him at #18.

I don't subscribe to the "they have to take a certain position in the 1st few rounds" theory. It's not how Jeff Ireland and staff work....they are going to target BPA at any number of positions, because that is how you improve the roster.

that said WR is an obvious need and I hope the right guy is there in the early rounds.....

Gonna be a lot of mad people when we draft a tackle from southeastern iowa polytechnic and try to convert him to guard/center. Oh he’ll come with an extensive injury history too!

Tackle from Tulsa is a possibility.

I am not gonna be shocked at whoever we take (could be any position, really?)
But we really need to be aggressive with this WR class...it is soooo deep and very talented.
Also the FA class is just not good. There is nobody out there that is gonna be a realistic target. The better ones will simply get paid too much guaranteed cash on the front end.

With MT's age and contract, drafting a few young WRs is just so important to build around.

Yep...this draft his hella deep at WR where a gamebreaking prospect is going to be available at 18...take one there, take another in the 2nd if they're there...and take another w/ one of the thirds if they're there.

Just kidding on the 3WRs...but I would love to see 2 from the first three rounds. Or maybe a trade for a vet w/ one of the 3rds. But as I said before....we CANNOT go into next season a MT13 injury away from being the worst WR group in the NFL, SEC, Big 10, PAC10, ACC, Sunbelt, etc.

He will just push the problems on down the line, and years from now the Saints will be carrying lots of dead cap hits.
What does it matter?

Wouldn't you rather have Cap concerns during a year where you have no expectations. Rather then having a year where you have them and your just a couple peaces away.

It's honestly really smart!

Why not go for it when you can, and when you can't, take the hit.

Mickey and company are very good at what they do.

Honestly he's the pioneer of this stuff. He was Restructuring and turning salary's to bonuses before any other team, and now several do it.

If the can is always kicked when it needs to be, why would it concern us.

We're lucky we have a FO that is always trying to WIN!
