What I would give up to get Dorsey who just happens to be just what we need!!! (2 Viewers)

One thing that I've noticed on here, many folks seem to treat this mythical draft chart as the end-all/be-all final word when it comes to trades.

I think it's more like the sticker price on a vehicle. If it's a standard edition truck among hundreds of similar trucks on the lot--you can negotiate the price down. If it's a special limited edition they can only get 10 of and already have a 50 name waiting list--you pay a premium for it. And some premiums cost more than others. And if you don't like/can't afford the premium, you walk away.

If the Dolphins take Jake Long @1, Rams could be losing Orlando Pace and desperately need a new OT to replace him, but decide Clady, Albert, nor Williams is worth pick #2 $, and know they can still have their choice @ 10--it makes them a lil more open to negotiate a trade.

Same with KC.

I'm not making a prediction here, just stating that $$$ and needs can also dictate whether a team is willing to move around in the draft--or take a veteran player at a position of need for them to make a trade happen.

The trade chart doesn't make the trades, but needs and the feeling of coming out a winner on a deal will make trades.

Not a good analogy. Why would another team "come down" on the price for us to move up with them? They don't have to trade down and are likely only considering it because they think they can gain an advantage in a trade because they have something you want.

In other words its the total opposite. That draft point chart is a starting point, but your going to have to sweeten the deal with the higher team to give them some incentive.

Actually, there is some legitimacy in the comment about "negotiating" on the draft chart.

In years past, many teams "demanded" they get a little extra chart value to sweeten the deal when trading a higher pick. It was a way to ensure they didn't come out looking bad to their peers or their fans.

But now, with the huge contracts the top guys are getting it may very well be possible to trade into the top of the round and give up less than chart value. The money is definitely becoming a factor.

They need to do something about this. It's becoming a real burden to the teams with early picks. Bust a pick or two and you kill your cap for years.

Dorsey is worth a lot...if we move to 2 I say give up a #2, and #3, and say a player like Devery or Josh Bullocks. If GD drops to #4 we don't have to give up Devery or Bullochs. Either way it's a win.

What I'm saying is that the draft chart is like the sticker price--it is a guide that someone came up with (the Cowboys, I believe). If you make a deal that doesn't match the guide, the NFL Police don't come and lock up the 2 teams.

If several teams want your pick, then you can try and whip them into a bidding war frenzy. Good for the team with the higher pick.

If no one wants your pick (especially with the costs of top 10 picks at the present), and you want to move back for whatever reason (usually to lower your cap cost, your player will be there several picks later, or you are looking to get extra picks), then you have to lower your demands--a sale, so to speak.

The basic law of supply and demand.

I never said any team had to lower what they felt they needed to get for trading their pick just because we want it.

I said it's up to the 2 teams to figure out what they are ok with paying and receiving. And they can always walk away if the cost is too much.

Advantage in a trade can take on several forms for a team.

My point in using the Rams and KC as examples--both need OTs badly. And if Jake Long is gone to the Dolphins @1, how much will those 2 teams over-pay if they take Clady, Albert, Williams, or Otah @ 2 or 5 instead of 10th? ($10-20mil in guaranteed money?)

We have a starting OT that might be available in a trade. Or maybe even a starting DE.

With that trade bait, either team could be interested in moving back and getting the same player that they would have to pay more for if they took him earlier AND a starting player, and maybe a 5th or 6th instead of not making a trade that could benefit them greatly w/o making a deal-buster demand for a 2 or 3.

Funny, so many folks on here are killing themselves to give up a #10 pick to swap with either the Eagles or Giants for injured BACK-UPs.

I was talking about packaging a starting player for at least 2 years (not an injured back-up) and maybe a late round pick to swap 1s. And we don't have to package half of our picks to move up. Win/Win for both teams.

I'm not saying that either team HAS to make that deal with us--just saying that if they're targeting OTs, it can become a Win/Win for both teams.

I have no idea how the trade guide rates it, but if my QB was getting murdered, and I had a chance to shore up my line to protect him by getting 2 starters by trading down my #1 pick--it's worth looking into.

It's worked pretty well for us with the Faine and Hollis draft day trade-downs.

lol, THE SHORT VERSION:
You have a Full-sized Hummer with high hidden costs for taxes, title, insurance, AND gas. These costs have you wanting a smaller SUV. Blue Book = $50k.

I have the smaller (and cheaper) H3 Hummer and it's too cramped for me, but I can afford the higher gas and insurance. Blue Book = $45k.

We find out we are both thinking about new vehicles, I offer you $3k to swap SUVs. You'll save $5k/yr. on gas & insurance. Do you trade with me???

Nope, 'cause you wanted a black one and mine's gold. ;)

But seriously, do you take less on Blue Book to save more by reducing your gas & insurance (salary cap)???

Dang.. too much typing and not enough drinking. :all_coholic:

I would not move up for Dorsey. Take Rivers at 10 and pick a DT later. We need Keith Rivers!!! As much as having the LSU alum might help we need more bang for our buck!!!

Thats the Beauty of how we draft. We don't need anyone. If we like Ellis and want to move up we can do it. If we'd rather stay put and draft an OT we can do it. If we want a LB we can take one.

I just hope we get a stud! You guys know what I mean, a pro bowl guy to take us home!

I believe in my gut that Dorsey would be worth a 2 and 3 to move up but I know this front office would not do that. With all the holes the Dolphins have it would be great for them and give us a guy we build around. Glenn will be a leader for at least 10 years and I know that is bold but what the heck its what I believe!

I hate thinking about Glenn as a dirty bird. He lives about 12 miles from me and I know he wants to be a Saint!!

thanks for all the feed-back and like what someone said earlier whats wrong with being a homer when your home town young man is considered one of the very best!!!!

if we get dorsey we fix one problem and one problem only - running up the guts. i think we've done a pretty good job at fixing that already by adding Vilma (if he can stay healthy) & McCray to play outside moving Grant inside for some plays. problem is they can still pass it anywhere they want and we'll not do a think to stop them. Gay & Glenn aren't solid players to bolster our secondary. CB is our major need and is where we should be drafting. not giving away all our picks to draft a position we already improved.

Pardon me, but I must disagree. Dorsey will not only plug the run, but he will put pressure on the QB up the middle allowing the outside guys to get the sack. He should not only disrupt the running game but will free up other pass rushers to work one-on-one! If opposing teams have to double-team Dorsey then our talented DE's should be able to get the sack. IMO, inside pressure is very key to having an outside pass rush. Just ask New England? I'm not saying I would sell "life and limb" for Dorsey but a 1st and 3rd would be acceptable, but who knows, the draft is a crap shoot at best. GEAUX SAINTS!! Through Thick and Thin

I actually believe that the Saints will get one of the 2 DT's in a couple of weeks. Saw it in the crystal ball. So the Dorsey/ Ellis band wagoneers get
ready for a huge party on draft weekend!

:congrats:

If trading up is not an option, we select Keith Rivers. We would actually have a respectable linebacking corps with Rivers, Vilma, and Fujita.
