What'll Payton's surprise play be? (1 Viewer)

The same play Boise state ran... that staue of liberty was sick...
I agree that the Saints would be the perfect team to use the Statue of Liberty play that Boise St ran. They could put 2 receivers on one side of the field with Deuce and Reggie both in the backfield, then run Reggie in motion to a position behind the 2 receivers. The defense's attention would automatically turn to Reggie if Drew faked a pass to Reggie with the ball behind his back for Deuce to run a long way on the opposite side of the field.

New Surprizes, No Surprizes

They've got to get Reggie another shot at that halfback pass.

I think this is exactly what will happen. As a matter of fact I was talking to some buddies about this just last week and I came up with the same thing. The one time Reggie threw the ball, he floated it just a little bit but all in all not too bad of a throw. Since then coach Payton has kept that play in his bag of tricks. I definitly would not be surprized to see Reggie throwing another pass during the playoffs.

I'm not sure what team you guys have been watching but I can tell you from being at the games that Reggie lines up as WR very often. As a matter of fact that is part of the reason he has so many receptions this year. I don't think any team would be surprized by that at all.

Maybe another End-around to Devry with Brees throwing the block??

Hey what about a double reverse, flea flicker? I ran that with my son's flag football team, it was called the "booger flicker."

I'll guess that Reggie actually gets used as wide receiver, for one

Yeah, that's my call, too. Payton has run this play a couple of times, most notably that time when he was overthrown when wide open, but not for a few games now. I thought then and I think now he's saving it for the play-offs. Pretty simple stuff. Reggie bolts toward the end zone and the defense thinls he's a decoy, but he's not.

I think the trick play will be Henderson on a deep pass and not dropping the ball.
Copper in the seam and not fumbling the ball.
Bush on the toss sweep and making one cut back up the middle before he gets to the sidelines.
Fred Thomas batting the ball down and not going for the INT (he should know by now he can't catch).
Hollis Thomas pluging up the middle and the LBs not allowing a 50 yard TD run around the tackle.
Brees not throwing 2 INTs in the red-zone.
Payton can say, "Surprise, we won't beat ourselves today."

I'm thinking that the play they always run, where they give it to Deuce up the middle then fake the reverse to Reggie... well, do that, but actually GIVE the ball to Reggie on the reverse...

Then have him throw it to a streaking WR. :9:

Or that SOL that Boise St. ran... that was soooooo freakin' sweet!

a quadruple reverse!!! First Deuce, then Reggie, then Karney, ending up with Brees running to the right in and empty field

the victory formation with 3 minutes left on the clock

I loved the play Boise ran to send the game into overtime. Short pass over the middle, just short enough to not make a first down. The defense converges on the guy catching the pass and over-pursue. The receiver flicks the ball to another receiver who takes it outside and scores. That was a well designed play and used at the perfect time.

Red Zone TD pass to Zack Strief lined up as an eligible TE.

They used him in that position a few times vs. NYG and Wash as a blocker.

Direct snaps

I'm surprised Payton hasn't installed any direct snap plays to Deuce/Reggie similar to Carolina (with Deangelo Williams) and/or the ones Haslett had a few years ago with Brooks in the shotgun formation. I think we may see that during the playoffs. Also, I think the halfback pass with Reggie will be tried at least once more before the end of the season.

That was indeed a perfectly executed play, but it's worth noting that even the Boise St. players themselves admitted that it never worked when they practiced it. That pitch is just so risky when you're in the middle of a defense with player flying all around like that. You'd better have nothing to lose when you run it, which was why Boise pulled it out when they did.
