i'm sure JimE (and probably GrandAdmiral and a few others) know this
just listening to 99% Invisible and just found out that 'Dodger' was once the Brooklyn Trolley Dodgers (named after electric trolleys took the place of horse drawn and the streets got MUCH more dangerous

thought that was cool and wanted to share

Early baseball rules had aspects akin to dodgeball, like putting a player out by hitting him with the ball while he's running between the bases.

So, under modern rules, what happens if a runner is hit by a ball, in the field of play, while he is not touching a base?

That largely depends if the ball passes a fielder (other than the pitcher) prior to the runner being hit with the ball.

Do you mean he gets hit by a batted ball? He's out. If he gets hit, say by a double play ball, then it depends if the umpire rules interference.
