I'm 53 years old and today I had my first taste of brandy!
It was a cheap brand (E&J)

It was strong and stout.

Can anybody recommend a midgrade brandy for my wife and I to try next?
Look for a less expensive Cognac. Courvosier VS won’t break the bank. I like the Martell Cordon Bleu but it might be a little steep for what you’re looking for.

Also, happy birthday!!
Tonight I'm sipping on this. It's VERY nice and ran $45+ tax

Next question:
What is the difference in flavor between cognac and regular brandy?

They are the same liquor. Cognac is from a specific region of France (like Champagne vs sparkling wine), so as a rule you will have better grapes, aging, and technique.

Armagnac is another but is not as common.

What @buzd said

The couple armagnacs I tried were very similar to cognac but had more of a funky, earthy flavor. Hard to describe but still very enjoyable. Haven't really had any brandy brands

That Woodford is my favorite in the regular grade - it’s just so smooth and at 90 proof doesn’t have that bite that a lot of bourbon has. It’s perfect, I’m drinking it right now in some egg nog and it’s so good.

I am trying it now. I ordered an Old Fashioned at Scarlet Pearl in D'iberville.

It's smooth.

This was a limited release hard to find somewhat pricey bottle of Hampden rum. I have dozen of bottles of various marques of Hampden, I love their stuff. It was also the last drink I poured last night and left the bottle on the kitchen counter...where the wife, looking for a rum for a boozy french toast sauce found it and made me a birthday breakfast, which was delicious, but damn why couldn't I have had something a touch less expensive for a last pour?
Anyway, Happy New year y'all!

I opened a bottle of an Irish whisky called Grey Coast. Really smooth. Glad I just happened to see it.
