Who is the greatest rock and roll band of all time? (1 Viewer)

I think this is a fun topic, but obviously it's impossible to pick a single greatest band. There have been so many amazing musicians, some great songwriters and poets, and so on throughout history, and yes, there are still some today. I never feel more full of hope for humanity than when I'm listening to great music.

I tend to agree. Music is probably one of the few mediums where freedom exists.

Good list, but you left off the Blues.
BB King or Muddy Waters. Honorable mention to Elmore James, Buddy Guy, and Albert Collins.

No music list is complete without including John Coltrane somewhere, so I'll put him at the head of the Jazz list, along with Buddy Rich.

Excellent choices. I didn't put Blues or Jazz because I was sticking to rock sub-genres. I did put "Blues Rock" (which again, drawing distinctions is difficult) and "Howlin' Wolf" is my pick while 70 era Chicago is my pick for jazz rock fusion.

I love Coltrane, but picking a greatest band or artist for jazz is something I would argue is utterly impossible.

See, I look at it differently, the narrative is definitely out there (spread by music "journalists and critics" that are mostly idiots).....but I don't define Southern Rock as something that applies to the Allman Bros....to me it is just a inane dumbed down description used by folks that don't really understand what they are hearing....but it is forever going to be a label used for the Allmans, I agree, but don't like it...

I love the story about your son listening to them for the first time, to me that is the exact reaction that great music can spark....

Most folks don't get how great STP was musically and how advanced they were, they were coming from a slightly different place than most of the other bands. Most people don't know this story, but in lieu of opening acts, Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath) for a time used to play jazz instrumentals on guitar.....STP's excellent guitarist (Dean DeLeo) did this for time but played prog instrumentals (like Dead of Night by UK and other Holdsworth stuff). I think one of the greatest compliments you can give a band is that "when I first heard that song, I wasn't sure it was them"....that happened to me more than once with STP....

I was a huge Quadrophenia fan when I was a teenager, I wrote my first term paper on it....

I understand what you're saying. I would say "journalists and critics" once having labelled "southern rock" a thing off of the Allman Brothers' music, made their mistake by putting Skynyrd, Outlaws, et al in the same category.

Really, The Allman Brothers and Leon Russell belong in their own category, I don't really care what we call it, but I would tend to call them the actual "southern rock". Perhaps we could add Dr. John to that category, but that's really it. No one else really has that sound. Skynyrd and the rest are more like country-influenced rock. I mean, The Outlaws even did "Ghost Riders in the Sky" for heaven's sake. However, I wouldn't put them together with The Band, The Marshall Tucker Band, and Johnny Cash as "country rock", but I do understand the issue of the Allman Brothers being put in the same category as those other so-called "southern rock" bands.

Bob Marley and the Wailers deserve a mention, if The Beach Boys are in contention.

Bob Marley's music is all soul.

Do you have a rose tattoo?
No but I’ve laid this head in many ports :hihi:

The duet with Springsteen is great. Ken Casey was telling the story of how they got drunk and decided to ask Springsteen to sing the duet, not really expecting him to say yes. When Springsteen responded he’d be glad to, it was like “Ohhhh, he said yes!! What now...?”

reggae presents its own category difficulty - it should be considered a step-sibling of rock & roll since both are off-spring of New Orleans rhythm & blues

My guess would be that reggae came from Calypso music, it would be hard to not hear the similarities. Calypso came from Africa, so the origins would point to that continent, not America. I could be mistaken, but it's only a guess.

Bob Marley has inspired many artists, but his music has lasted the test of time. Definitely an unforgettable artist, musician, and song writer.

Blink 182

Nuff said

Blink 182 has some good songs, actually gonna cover one of their songs, but they wouldn't even be the best punk band. Maybe better than Green Day, but best band of all time is a huge stretch.

Top 5 punk bands would have to include, Bad Religion, Minor Threat, The Clash, The Ramones, and Sex Pistols. No way does Blink 182 crack the top 5, even Fat Mike from NOFX acknowledges Bad Religion as the best punk band. Blink 182 could possibly crack the top 20, but they hardly have the underground vote, not by a long shot. Didn't put Nirvana in the top 5, because although they have punk influence, they hardly portray a purely punk sound. Nirvana is more of a punk influenced alternative grunge band.

Top 5 pop punk bands, you could make a solid case.

Sorry, but you're both wrong. Reggae came directly from Ska, which came from Britain, but flourished in Jamaica in the 50s. Jimmy Cliff was a huge influence on Marley as well as many of the other ska bands of that era. In fact, The Wailers started as a Ska band before becoming Reggae after Peter Tosh left. Of course, there is some Calypso influence on Ska, so sonicboom is closer to the truth than gmr.

EDIT: My mistake, Ska did originate in Jamaica. There's a British band called Symarip that I though predated the others, but they don't.

radios stations in NO starting boosting signals and Jamaica was getting transistor radios - Jamaica got most of its 'outside' music from new orleans (and a bit from florida) - the ska beat was an attempt to replicate r&b couldn't quite copy the beat

Can I least be partially correct?

Reggae's direct origins are in the ska and rocksteady of 1960s Jamaica, strongly influenced by traditional Caribbean mento and calypso music, as well as American jazz and rhythm and blues.

Looks like we are all right?!?! I still think Calypso is the root though, ska, rocksteady, rhythm and blues were all after Calypso.

You are correct sir. Reggae is an off shoot from Calypso which originally came from Trinidad. Harry Belafonte made it popular in the U.S. The Banana boat song was the first single to sell more than a million copies.
