I think the reason why Nirvana had so much depth, is Kurt had so many influences. In the age without internet, he found many artist that many haven't heard of.

I'm pretty sure Kurt said, his favorite artist is Lead Belly, during the taping of the unplugged set. He covered The Vaselines, CCR, The Wipers, Velvet Underground, and many others. He also listened to gangster rap and Metallica.
