Why are the Saints the only team who doesn't understand how you're supposed to use the black helmet option? (1 Viewer)

When I heard that Nike was going to be doing NFL uniforms I had so much hope. I assumed Nike would be able to produce the color gold. Sadly I was mistaken. Not only were they unable to match the golds, they were somehow worse than Reebok. Nike trotted out the color of sand and called it gold. Then they had the weird toilet seat collars. The color of the pants was so bad that the team opted to not even wear them because they look like khakis.

Nike has tinkered with our uniforms over the years but the golds still don't match. They knocked it out of the park with our color rush unis though. Makes no sense. How can they give us a perfect color rush but mess up the regular uniforms so bad? And the cherry on top is that now they wear the black helmet with the god awful stripe down the middle with the color rush joints.

It's such a shame because our regular color rush uniforms are the best uniform in the league. And that's not just my opinion as a Saints fan. That's just an accepted fact at this point.
Nike uses an almost universal color for “Vegas Gold” throughout their contracted uniforms. It’s unfortunate for us because the Saints didn’t give them any pushback except for their initial launch which forced Nike to darken the gold, albeit slightly. It goes unnoticed to many who aren’t into these things but it’s still a flaw as the color gets washed enough for those of us who still complain.

What’s worse is that we could have the gold pants with a metallic sheen. The Cowboys still use that type of fabric on their sets. For whatever reason we chose not to do the same which gives us the khaki look that nobody likes.

On another note after looking through numerous pro and college teams in various sports, I’ve really settled on UCLA having the best looking gold out there. It shows up well indoors and outdoors and it’s the perfect balance of not being too vintage and mustard like, but as pure and rich a gold you can get.

I’d love for us to adopt that color gold and use it across the current and color rush sets with matching lids. It would negate a lot of the headaches and maybe even fix the black helmet if we were to stripe it properly.

This reminds me of the my cousin vinnie pants scene. If you're losing does anyone care what color your helmet is?

I don't know why the Saints didn't demand a better gold. Nike can have a universal gold to use but this isn't high school football. They can't be trotting out generic colors for NFL franchises. What's so frustrating is the fact that Nike took some teams really seriously and tried to get it right. You mention the Cowboys pants. Not only are those pants metallic, they have two different types of pants. For their white jersey they wear the metallic silver/blue pants. But then with the blue jerseys they have pants that are plain silver. If they can produce that clean, regular silver then it seems like our gold would be easy.

And yeah I've always liked UCLA's uniforms. Their uniforms have subtly changed over the past 30 years going from Champion to Reebok to Adidas to now Jordan brand. Since Jordan and Nike are the same thing, UCLA proves Nike has the capability to produce a proper gold.

I thought it was known and he been a subject on here before but after we designed that helmet. The NFL came out with a rule that alternate helmets could only be worn with alternate jerseys. The color rush uni's are our alternate.

I'm pretty sure the team had in mind to wear those black helmets with the black jersey's.
Quoting again for people that didn’t read it.

Not sure if the NFL made up that rule after the alternate helmet designs were submitted or if the Saints brass just didn’t read the fine print regarding the rules for the new alternate helmets (wouldn’t surprise me) but yeah. There’s no way that Color Rush uniforms/black helmets were the desired aesthetic at ANY point; it was forced upon the team and they weren’t able to adjust their alternate helmet design because it was too late.

Watching the Cardinals and all these teams who don't even have black in their color scheme... Yet they have the two cents to understand that you use the black helmet with black jerseys. Just like every team besides us who have an alternate black helmet.

I swear, they are wearing the black helmets with the color rush as a cry for help, because nothing else makes sense.

Why would you ruin your color rush while also missing the opportunity to have the best all black uni in the league?

Someone make it make sense?
As a longtime Saints fan, I think what you are asking is going to come down to personal fan favorite. I understand that many people think all black uniforms, i.e. Jerry Glanville in Atlanta, can be intimidating to the other team.

The real question is what should be the main base helmet. Gold with black or black with gold?

Me personally I think the gold with black is the personality of the team from day one and I would not like to see it changed. But this comes down to personal favorites and everybody is going to be different.

1969 unauthorized black helmets.

Th e'69 helmet should have been the design we went with since we were blocked from using it way back then.

Also the black on black would make finding your players in the dome hard to see down the field
Yeah, I think it may have more to do with the new black helmet than the uniforms. The new helmet just doesn’t look right.

I did notice that they wore white jerseys with gold numbers with black trim and gold pants. I believe they also wore black jerseys with gold numbers and gold pants.

Even LSU gets it from a "color rush" uni perspective. If we're not gonna roll with the gold helmet with that uni, I'd take a white one.

Still, I'm all in for a total redesign of our black helmet WITH the all black uni.
