With the signing of Jay Feely, the Dolphins were going to cut Mare anyways, so why bother giving up a pick? Mare wanted to come here anyway, so did we do so in order to not have to overpay in a bidding war with overteams once Mare would become a free agent by being cut? I know we have never had much luck in the 6th round, and most players we pick there don't make the roster, but still, I don't like trading for something we could have gotten for free.

The way free agency has gone, it would not have been a definte that he would choose us over some other teams.

Because this way we don't have to compete for him. Players say they want to go to a certain team all the time, but almost always they go to whoever pays the most. There was no guarentee that we wouldn't have been outbid by some other team.

This was brought up a few times already when we traded for him. If you want something, you go get it. No use in waiting around and missing out. A few teams were interested in Mare. We made sure that we got him.

I have not heard Mare personally state anywhere that he wanted to come here. Although the "Dome factor" is appealing to any kicker, a number of factors could have sent him elsewhere.

Also, Mueller took on Mare's bonus for this year to ensure that they got value for Mare.

From what I gather , there were 3 teams in the bidding one of them being Atlanta, all were offering 7ths rounders. Our 7th is less appealing cause its at the bottom of the round. So we gave up a 6th (which is what 5 picks from being a 7th) Upped the ante' and we called it a day, done deal. No bidding war, no risk losing the player we are targeting.

football players never lie about where they want to play:shrug:

Been discussed before but basically there was no guarantee that he would pick us over the other teams. And like someone else said he wouldn't have been released b/c there was already a higher 7 on the table. So we had to give the late 6 to get him.

What we gave up isn't much for a starting player. Also saves us a roster spot and upgraded a huge weekness (kickoffs).

because other teams probably wanted Mare too, so the Saints made a play for him!

Why are people still complaining that we gave up a pick that could technically be considered in the 7th round anyway for a very solid kicker who will thrive here?

Because the Saints front office is DUMB

Edit: Loomis is a bean counter.

Edit Edit: I'm kidding. I love this pickup and I can't wait until Mare breaks the NFL record for touchbacks considering he's going to be kicking off all the time (touchdowns, baby!)

Exactly, so far the Saints have gone after Roderick Hood (choose to sign with Arizona even though the money was equal) and David Macklin (choose the 'Skins despite the rumor the Saints offered more). Tory James seems to be leaning toward signing with the Pats despite the fact he's a New Orleans and LSU product. Sadly as it turns out New Orleans has proven to be a far less desirable place to play for FAs than I thought it would be. Trading a pick assured Mare would be Saint rather than lose out on him like they have so many other FAs.......

I don't know what the other team is, but Atlanta doesn't have a 7th round pick (other than an a Compensatory selection.) We actually have their seventh from the Wayne Gandy trade (I think). Our 7th is pick 220, while we gave up the 199th pick.

I think that Randy Mueller was pushing for a sixth rounder, which they lost in some trade with the Broncos. We were the only team of the three willing to give up our sixth.

I think it was a good trade. We needed a reliable long ball kicker and now we have one. It is not ideal to have to draft a kicker who would need to be developed, which is not helpful for a superbowl run.

Also, even if he is cut, there would be more competition for his services and we may have to go into a bidding war for his services and possibly lose out. Which means we do not get the long ball kicker we desperately need. I think if you are trying to make a superbowl run it is important to be aggressive and losing a sixth round pick for a championship caliber team is not going to hurt one bit.

I have a sense of deja vu with this thread. Wasn't this discussed before?

If Mare hits the open market, he can sign with any team. If we make a trade offer, he can't. It's that simple. I think he was worth a sixth rounder. The Saints obviously wanted a stronger leg for kickoffs, freeing up one spot on the roster as well. If your PK can do both kickoffs and FG's, the team doesn't need two people for those positions.
