Will Smith goes on stage at the Oscars and hits Chris Rock then verbally threatens him from his seat (3 Viewers)

He's a talker and an 'explainer'. So I just want to hear a more cohesive explanation as to why he thought that was ok.

I've said it before but when people do things so seemingly out-of-character, I immediately wonder what's really going on. Like, inside. Hopefully in the coming days and weeks, he can make it make sense.

Joke or not.....make light of something about my wife she can't control in front of me would most likely earn more than a slap to the face.
I don't know. I mean, I've never been in a situation where someone insulted my wife like that. At the same time, wife and I have pretty thick skin, so that kind of joke wouldn't bother us much. We're capable of laughing at ourselves. I mean, all due respect to JPS, but I lol'd. And all due respect to JPS, if you can't take a joke from Chris Rock, smh.

Will Smith slapping Rock was hilarious tho. Stupid, but hilarious.

They are in Hollywood at the Oscars where "roasting" is expected. If you can't handle the roasting, stay home. JK Simmons was basically called old and ugly. As an old and ugly person, I could see how he could be offended by that joke. He took it in stride.

If someone comes out of the blue and insults your wife, I can understand you being angry. This isn't out of the blue. He and his wife are front and center at a "roast-type" event.

Finally, I think Smith's actions are insulting toward his wife. Jada Pinkett Smith is not anyone who I think is unable to stand up for herself. She looks like a strong and independent woman who could go up and do the slapping. If anyone had the right to slap (not saying there is), it belonged to her--not Will Smith...who actually laughed at the joke initially.

I am going to preface this by saying I have a very close cousin, like a sister really, who is dealing with alopecia. So, not personally, but I can empathize with the trauma of dealing with that illness.

But, I lost all respect for Will tonight. One of the many things my parents taught me, particularly my mom, is time and place. I get being offended. You handle that backstage. You can protect your family and be a man without resorting to violence. That was an overreaction.

As a black man, I'm devastated. To do that to another black man, a black icon, doesn't sit well with my spirit. It reinforces every negative stereotype and trope of the angry, aggressive black man and I must say I cringed at seeing a mostly white crowd give Will a standing applause for defending himself for slapping his brother. My gut says Will wouldn't have slapped Jimmy Kimmel like that and the crowd wouldn't have been as accommodating. It normalizes the trope of "black on black" violence being not only accepted but expected.

Lastly, for all of my sisters out there saying "Team Will" or " way to stand up for your wife." Horrible take. So toxic masculinity is cool now? The toxicity is okay as long as its being shown to another man? A real man can stand up and protect his wife and not resort to that. Not in that moment, in that way, for that grievance. Will owes Chris an apology. And I would have no issue with Will demanding Chris apologize to his wife.

But, man, I hated to watch that.

Jada broke that dude. Banging other dudes, embarrassing him on TV, and he chooses to slap a small comedian for a funny joke??? Will should’ve slapped himself long time ago. It’s not like Chris wished death upon her.

Beautifully stated. Much respect.

I will always respect Will Smith's story, what he went through to make it as an artist and an actor. Dear god, this whole situation from the round table with him and Jada to this has just destroyed him, body language don't lie. Will Smith has been picked on a whole lot since the infamous roundtable fiasco, memes, butt of jokes and now not being able to take a joke, even if said joke is in poor taste. The internet is going to pour it onto Will Smith 10x worse now, the amount of memes from this is going to be beautiful content.

Every comedian got put on notice tonight that someone in the audience just walked up on stage and assaulted them.

She's got a point. This could have a huge negative impact on comedy.

Meh. She did the whole Trump severed head thing how long ago? People didn’t stop coming to her shows because they have been afraid that a Trump supporter might get violent, they haven’t been showing up to her shows because her acts suck.

That was my EXACT reaction after seeing that clip!!!

Not only that, but now he and his family are fair game to all of the comedians out there that will, without a doubt, come to Rock's defense. They will be relentless and there's a ton of material for them to work with!!!
