The New Orleans Saints have another Super Bowl contender with quarterback Drew Brees, at age 39, as its centerpiece. They are taking their shot now.
The Saints agreed Tuesday to a trade that brings them cornerback Eli Apple from the New York Giants. They wanted to make a deal to bolster their secondary and, with the Arizona Cardinals apparently unwilling to part with star cornerback Patrick Peterson despite his reported request to be traded, and the Saints without their 2019 first-round pick as a result of a draft night trade this year, this was the trade they could make.
Remember when the NFL was a no-trade league? That's not the case any longer, as the action continues in advance of next Tuesday's leaguewide trade deadline. It has become positively baseball-like, with contenders adding to their rosters and bad teams dismantling and stockpiling draft choices.
The Saints-Giants trade follows the pattern of Monday's deal that sent wide receiver Amari Cooper from the Oakland Raiders to the Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys got the wide receiver they so desperately needed while the Raiders, after trading pass rusher Khalil Mack before the season, added yet another first-round draft choice next year. They have a record of 1-5 this season but now have a trio of first-round selections in next year's draft.
