With the 9th Pick in the 2025 draft, who should the Saints select? (merged) (101 Viewers)

That’s not my premise…

My premise is we shouldn’t draft anymore fat guys early until we have some damn players that can score points…. Because we have been doing that to no avail for the last 8 seasons.

We have already built ours too…. They need to play better. You can’t keep doubling your bet every time you lose…. At some point you have to play at another table.
Even tho I’m a ‘build the lines first’ guy through and through I certainly see and appreciate your points.

What we can all agree on, I think, is that we have to draft better.

They debunk your premise that fat guys should only be drafted in the 3rd or later rds. The Lions have had a tremendous bounty of high draft picks, they started out building their OL and DL and they drafted well, we did not. That does not mean that you don't build your lines 1st and the best OL fat guys come in the 1st and 2nd rds. The Lions were ABLE to pick Gibbs and Williams and LaPorta because they not only had all those picks to address other areas but because they built their OL and DL FIRST

To counter that, Ruiz = meh. Penning = meh. Fuaga hasn't been bad, but not as good as most expected. With our scouting, that doesn't necessarily work, either. The Saints just need to get good players wherever they can get them, because they've done a poor job over the last few years.

For sure…. I just think this will be a super pivotal draft for the team…. I’d hate to see them waste it on another Davenport, Eiils, Ruiz, Peat, Turner, etc type pick that either doesn’t work or doesn’t move the needle.

We’ve done that over and over…. Time to build a young offensive force that’s cheap for 4 or 5 years and fill in the gaps.

The Lions have essentially drafted purely BPA since Campbell took over because they address needs via free agency and not handing out gross contracts with no way out to players in their 30s. Thus they always have money to sign and re-sign the guys they want to keep while just pumping their team full of the best football players possible every draft.

The Lions have only drafted ONE offensive lineman in the first three rounds since Campbell arrived.

How about this? Let's say the Saints do as some say and build the trenches first and ignore premium positions till they've built that up first. But then they are picking in the teens and have to trade up to where they are now. Why not just get those premium guys now that the Saints already have a top 10 draft pick. There's no way to build a Superbowl roster in 1 year. If you have a chance to get a good player, you get him because you may not have as good of an option in next year's draft.
I'm in no way opposed to drafting skilled players high, my #1 wish player is McMillan but the chances are he will not be there. So what do you do, reach for a player just because he's a skilled player?? Heck no. I think an X WR is one of our biggest needs. I don't think Burden is worth the 9th pick and he's not an X.

I don't think Jeanty is worth the 9th pick plus we have AK for 2 more yrs and I think he'll play at an elite level for those 2 yrs and we also need to see just what we have in Miller, so we use the 9th pick to have Jeanty and just stash him for a couple yrs ?? Or we move on from Miller only to have him be great somewhere else? OR we get Jeanty who has pretty high usage already beat up behind a not ready for prime time OL for a couple yrs It does not make sense.

If Graham is there we take him, him along with Bresse gives us a good future on the interior DL and helps with stopping the run something we have not been able to do for yrs.

If both are gone ( most likely) I hope Dallas give us a 2nd to move up and get Jeanty and can fill out the roster with BPA at a position of need

But that's not what you said. I don't think we should draft a OL with #9 I would prefer McMillan but if he's not there I'll be happy with Graham. or trade down if he's not there. Now is not the time to pick a RB when the DL is awful, We can't stop the run or rush the passer. This IS the yr if those 2 players are not there to trade down

Just because WE haven't drafted well does not mean you don't draft OL or DL in the 1st 2 rnds. One of the reasons I'm wanting to keep Kubiak and the O coaching staff is the system he runs does not need the greatest OL , just a very good LT which I hope that Fuaga can be. We do need to get better on the IOL because Ruiz and Patrick are not very good. I would move Ruiz to backup C and replace him and also replace Patrick hopefully in FA.

Penning has shown vast improvement under Benton and Dennison which is why I'd like to keep the O staff

Too many other needs and RBs can be picked later or in FA. Pierre Thomas and Chris Ivory both FA.
Times a thousand. Can literally name tons of good to great RB’s that were taken after the 1st round.

The RB needs to be generational to be taken in the top ten imo.
