With win tomorrow, Dennis Allen will have identical record as Payton through 37 games as Saints head coach (1 Viewer)

Fans are hilarious. When the team was struggling you couldn't say one positive thing about DA without half the fans calling you a sunshine pumper and telling you how he's a terrible coach and a beta male. Now that we have won two games by big margins, you can't point out that he had issues as a coach the last two years that he has improved on without being called negative and being told that you need to eat crow because DA is perfect and above all criticism.

The truth is somewhere in the middle. All coaches have things they can improve on no matter how good things are going and all coaches do some things really well not matter how bad things are going.

It was ridiculous to call DA a beta male who doesn't know how to coach the last two years and it's ridiculous to say that he has always been perfect, didn't make mistakes in the past, and hasn't improved as a head coach this year.

I've been saying from the get go that maybe DA didn't have the go ahead to change OCs. That out of loyalty PC was made OC . And without the benefit of seeing the future it made some sense. PC was calling plays in 2012 and did fine, but he had Drew. I thing PC's main problem is he was just not strong enough to be an OC without Payton to back him up And also he tried to fit DC in the mold of DB
You might be right. It could’ve been ML and DA having an agreement, let’s see how it works with PC. And if it doesn’t go GREAT, we’ll change OCs. With the understanding that Da’s job was safe regardless. This would make sense why DA seemed comfortable even with a not so great season. I said “GREAT” because technically an argument could’ve been made that the last 5 games of 23 sort of showed that we were on the right track. But ML and DA probably said, we became good, but not great, considering how badly we were beaten by the great teams.

Key difference.. Payton already tripled the saints playoff win count by the time he was 18-18.. lets see if Allen can double the SB count.
He doubled it.

Haslett won the first one in 2000, Payton won the second one in 2006, the team was still at two in 2008.

This is why eating crow is foolish... I used to defend DA and Pete, then I bashed DA and Pete. I don't feel bad about either times I did it. But this is to be expected. The Payton doing Payton things in Denver thread is full of folks that are appalled anyone would criticize Payton. *gasp* "oh no, don't say those things about my Payton"

All the people eating Derek Carr Crow are finding it hard to swallow.

Most of the same people refuse to even try a bite of Dennis Allen Crow.

They have this preconceived idea that it will taste like Buzzard.

Happy and hopeful to eat crow about DA this season....all season.....there is a lot of season left though....
Screw eating crow... if the criticism was valid at the time, it was valid and it isn't crow worthy. People can change and people can improve, and no one needs to feel bad about how they felt when those same people were performing at a level that deserved to be criticized.

Well said, I'm not eating crow over the last 2 seasons, because DA deserved a lot (not all) of the criticism he got.....what I'm eating crow about is I didn't think he would suddenly turn into a good HC, so far this season I'm dead wrong about that.....

There's more Love and Respect for D.A. in this thread than there is in the Dennis Allen Appreciation Thread 2024 Edition.

To be fair, that first season was an NFC Championship Game appearance so that is going to get any coach some credit in the bank. And many were still calling for his head after three straight 7-9 season. Even after having won a Super Bowl.

As far as that long paragraph above, in my not normally so humble opinion, it's a reasonable take. Allen had many issues in his first two years. Were they firing level offenses? Probably not. Did Saints fans expect too much given the situation Payton left us in? Certainly. But I think the gist of that long paragraph is that Allen has now made the necessary changes and deserves credit for it.

Certainly there were way over the top takes on Allen like he's a terrible coach, doesn't know what he is doing, worst coach in the NFL, worst coach in NFL history, etc. But, he did have issues.

Allen is a much improved coach this year. But you don't become a much improved coach without having had things to improve on.
Payton was on the hot seat going into 2009. He started 2007 0-4, went 4-4, then lost to an 0-8 Rams team on my bday. People were absolutely wanting him fired if we had another average season instead of winning the Super Bowl.

Some people need to slow their roll and let him legitimately win something before celebrating after beating two questionable teams. DA still can't hold a candle to Payton, but he's getting better.

There were some real pompous tones in here a couple of weeks ago. Sure has been quiet ever since.
