Xbox buys Activision/Blizzard (1 Viewer)

the idea of the "omg console wars" is all but dead...at this point, it's pretty clear that all 3 console makers are doing something completely different

Nintendo relies on gimmicks and a staple of top selling IPs....they aren't interested in being the most powerful console and there is really no need to be when you are making the kinds of games that Nintendo people play

Microsoft just wants subscriptions to Gamepass...it's a great value and probably the most consumer friendly....the long term effect on the devs of these games is yet to be seen....look for plenty of monetization from Gamepass titles to allow devs to recoup money they might have gotten for a traditional sale of their game

Sony is content to keep on doing the same things they have been....they know if they continue to make bangers, people will happily buy them.....and they are being persistent with VR which is mostly dumb but i guess someone has to do it
why do you make me agree with you? i hate myself.

I was just coming to post this. Seems like a big deal...but I'm not really sure what it does for Sony in a big picture sense.

Destiny is the biggest(and best) "MMO lite" or "looter shooter" in gaming...i suspect Sony will have Destiny for free on PS+ or PSNow as a way to entice people into buying their console...

also, Bungie is essentially the main reason why FPS multiplayer is so popular

I've played lots of BF 3/4, Halo and some COD, but never tried Destiny. I'm still playing on the 360. Probably will move to PS5 or XBOX later this year. Haven't decided yet.

as someone who has played Destiny for 7 years, i honestly don't know how to recommend it to anyone at this point...i mean, it's arguably the best FPS ever made in terms of moment to moment gameplay but it's a massive timesink and requires some level of commitment in order to keep up

i love Destiny and will continue to play it, but there is something to be said about a game that you can just pick up at anytime and have the same experience no matter how much time you were away

Since kids in the 1990s clambered across monkey bars while declaring undying fealty to Nintendo and Sega, the world of video games has clung to an idea: console wars.

Over the years, the players changed — Nintendo vs. Sega ultimately gave way to Sony vs. Microsoft — but discrete devices like the PlayStation and Xbox remained the centerpiece.

Now, though, on the back of a slew of multibillion-dollar purchases, the industry appears to be entering a new phase that transcends physical hardware: the consolidation wars.

Last month, Take-Two made history by buying Zynga for $12.7 billion, only to be dwarfed immediately by Microsoft, which purchased Activision Blizzard for a record $68.7 billion in an all-cash deal that used up about half of the tech company’s cash on hand.

An announcement from Sony followed soon after, with the Japanese electronics and entertainment company acquiring “Halo” creator and “Destiny” developer Bungie for $3.6 billion. Now, market analysts and industry veterans say nearly any gaming studio could be subject to a similar deal.

The Microsoft-Activision Blizzard deal comes at an interesting time for antitrust regulation. The Federal Trade Commission has been frequently criticized in recent years for not cracking down on competition and privacy abuses. But now, with the recent introduction of more aggressive leadership, the commission is operating under a more ambitious mandate to hold Big Tech responsible............

Everyone buying everyone around here…lol.

we're headed to a time with very little console exclusivity...too much cheddar is being left on the table....

how good of a long term plan is it to focus on Gamepass when you don't have really good games coming in on the backend. For me they are losing the console wars due to the quality of exclusives. If you compare the only PS exclusives to the only MS exclusives, this hasn't been a competition at least since LOU came out.

The Halo and GOW series made it interesting for a while but both of those series became stale really fast.

I think Bethesda is going to change that a little bit. That's why i will get one.
