You are GM, do you trade up or down in draft? (1 Viewer)

It depends entirely on who is available. I would lean toward accumulating picks but would always be willing to move up for that special player. We seem to move up a lot and it doesn't always pay off. Olave was a home run though the cost was high. Davenport, obviously not a home run. Mahomes who got scooped right before we were going to pick him was a home run for KC.

I like the way the Ravens have run their drafts under Ozzie Newsome. They rarely trade up or down. Ozzie is a
proponent of letting the draft fall to him and selecting the BPA regardless of position. It seems to be working
since the Ravens have been contenders for the past 20+ years.
The Ravens are good at what they do, but just to note that Ozzie retired as GM at the end of the 2018 season.

Pick #29 is worth 640 points. Let's use Arizona as a potential trade partner. Arizona has pick #34 (560 points) and, in the fourth round, pick #104 (85 points). That is a fair trade.

Arizona also has a supplemental 3rd round pick #96 (116 points). Saints would have to send 5th round pick #146 (32 points) to get into the late 3rd round.

Proposed Trade: (Scenario 1)
Saints send pick #29 to Arizona.
Saints get from Arizona, pick #34 and 4th round pick #104.

Saints give up 640 points, get back 645 points.

OR

(Scenario 2)
Saints send pick #29 AND 5th round pick #146 to Arizona.
Saints get pick #34 and 3rd round pick #96.

Saints give up 672 points, get back 676 points.

People think the chart doesn't matter that much, but it does matter. The 5th year option might get you a little bit of premium towards the end of round #1, but probably not enough to get a mid 3rd round pick unless you trade past our current pick in the 2nd round.

You also have to look at what picks teams actually have, I just don't see a trade back to the early 40's and getting back a 3rd round pick as an option, I don't see the potential team in the chart, unless it is the Arizona trades above. Saints could probably get away with throwing our second 5th round pick to Arizona in scenario #2 above. Pick #165 is 24 points instead of pick #146 at 32 points, so Saints get a "premium" of 12 points in this trade instead of 4 points. (664 Saints vs 676 Arizona)

This is a great source, has the picks and point values in one easy site to look at.

Well explained. We trade down so rarely that people oft forget what the realistic payout is when doing so. Someone will have suggested, with a straight face, that we could trade our late first for a pair of seconds at some stage along the way. It's like when people thought Luke McCown could net a draft pick after one decent showing against Carolina.

This question is literally impossible to answer without knowing how the draft has shaken out. The only answer is that he needs to be open to both (and I'm sure he is.. though experience tell us he's much more likely to move up).
