Von Bell? (2 Viewers)

"they signed a free-agent free safety (Jairus Byrd in 2014), and said, we are going to keep him in the middle of the field like the goalpost. Well, that's great. He's not going to make one play back there, and now we have changed the entire defense for one signing, and it ruined us."

- Rob Ryan

Plenty of truth to this. Playing Byrd as a single high safety has taken away his ability to get the INTs that we coveted in the first place.

That is indeed the truth. That article answered a lot of questions and it made sense why the defense fell from 2013 to 2014/15.

To back up what RR is saying, shorty after we signed Byrd, he created an instagram account. He didn't have many followers yet, and he didn't have many pictures, but he posted one picture of himself talking on the phone.

His caption said that he was talking to Payton & Ryan about adjustments on the defense.

So what I take from that is when Free Agency started, Payton & Loomis signed Byrd with the intentions in mind to run a Seattle type defense. RR knew nothing about it until after the fact.

I believe he was on vacation when he found out that we signed Byrd.

Deep cover or not, Byrd has to come up and lay the wood on crabtree on that late 3rd down and about 5.

Crab got his reception, byrd basically stops and crab just plows into him and bullies him over for the first.

gotta lay into him there hoss.

Not to mention the 75-yard TD run.

That's a play the FS absolutely has to make. Get in front of him, get an angle, something. Dude was just gone when he was 15 yards past the LOS. No ******* excuse for that. None. You're supposed to be one of the best, and that was a bad read, a worse recovery angle and a complete whiff.

Byrd turns 30 in less then a month. I'd just sit him now and play Bell or Harris. If we're going to have the worst D in the league, let's do it with guys who might be good when the rest of them are.

Agreed..Can't make amateur mistakes like that. Not gonna say he's avoiding contact because of his fragile state but he sure is hell wasn't trying to establish his presence as the free safety...the enforcer...the last line of defense.

Vaccaro would have left crabtree in a body bag along with Roman or bell who took on lasco who is no slouch who runs with bad intentions.

We ran a single high with Sharper...whats the difference? Lot's of blitzing, lots of pressure, and close to stud man to man corners in 09. Now our corners are river parish disposal level and our front 4 pass rush looks like we have 4 under tackles rushing the passer in slo motion. Can we blitz more for pressure? Would anyone with those corners?

The success of the scheme is predicated on corners doing well man to man often on an island with a high margin of error placed on them, everything falls apart without them. If we go cover 2 our front 7 has to go into beast mode against the run and the front 4 has to be as good as 2013.

I'm just going to come out and say it. It wasn't a bad read. It was a player who is only playing for his contract who doesn't want to sacrifice his body for the team or the game. He could care less. And you know the other defensive players know this. How is this affecting team chemistry? He's got to be benched and replaced with a player who's hungry, regardless of any difference in skill set or experience.

Do you feel like sharing how you have such a clear and certain insight into his motives as a player?

Someone explain how the Raiders gashed us for 75 yards up the middle....where are these safeties? Inexcusable. We have arguably the worst safety combo in the NFL.

Yes, Byrd has been terrible since signing with us. However, you are delusional if you can't see how good of a game Vaccaro played. That guy is going to emerge as one of the best safeties in the game this year. book it.

I say play Vonn Bell next to him and see what we got. Can't be worse than Byrd.

Man is that spot on. Guess the only thing more frustrating than being a Saints fan is being the Saints' DC. It's just a proxy job , you are at the whim of SP's personnel decisions. It's not a real job from an authority standpoint but , it is very much a real job from an accountability standpoint ( saints DC have the lifespan of a mayfly)

Came here to say this. Absolutely pitiful. That play breaking for 10-20 yards? Yeah that happens, but it should NEVER EVER get past the single high safety straight up the middle. I was livid and I usually don't get mad at the kind of stuff. Byrd played terribly yesterday. Say what you will about him, but man I miss Malcolm Jenkins so much.

It's a fan message board. That's his observation. Get over it. Go argue with your wife or neighbor or whatever. If he thinks Byrd is playing to protect himself he can say it.

Byrd is a guy just going through the motions at this point . Get the rook on the field and let him lay the wood.

We've actually played more zone and that's why it's even more important for the PassRush to be better than it was under Greggs more man heavy scheme. In fact it's more match zone. We don't have the corners to play a purely man scheme. Greer, Gay,Jenkins,Porter,Harper,Robinson allows you to go man heavy scheme. We just don't have that flexibility. It's not the exact same scheme is the only thing I can tell you.

Give me Fournette and a Passrusher out 1st two draft picks and we'll be ok. That's not going to happen because we are dedicated to Ingram for one more year and we'll give Lasco another year to develop. At the least we'll probably rid ourselves of Spiller and draft a new satellite back.
