I thought Fyter Fest was a good show in parts but at other times it felt like an Indy show with a big budget, and that stuff doesn’t translate to a promotion trying to establish itself as a credible national outfit.

This promotion has a heap of goodwill and has already put on some really high-quality matches (Cody v Dustin, the six man tag at FF) but some of the other stuff like the librarians, Jebailey being on the pre-show yesterday and that initial battle royale at DON just scream indy-riffic. I make this observation too because I want these guys to succeed desperately (I already own two AEW shirts, bought Double or Nothing and FF which was not free in Australia).

Fully agree with MJF being a star in the making, but think their roster is still lacking depth. I’ve been watching a heap of NJPW and went to their Southern Showdown event the other night with Ospreay v Eagles which is the best live match I’ve ever seen and a clear MOTY candidate for 2019. The key takeout on any NJPW show though is that guys like Okada, Tanahashi, Ospreay, etc all look like huge stars and back it up in the ring to a level unmatched anywhere.

I don’t see that with many guys in AEW who fit this criteria at the moment - Omega obviously, Mox ... Y2J to a degree but I thought he was exposed at Dominion. For a guy like Janela who is a great character, has cool attire and is a versatile worker, it’d just take him getting in slightly better shape and applying some tanning lotion to look like a true upper / midcard guy. I’m not sold on Page at all as the #1 contender to the HW title though and there seems to be a pronounced drop-off outside of 4-5 major guys.

Anyway - early days yet, still super exciting to have a promotion with this platform and opportunity. Hopefully they can take it.

So what did everyone think of Fight for the Fallen? I thought it was okay (Omega v CIMA MOTN, Lucha Bros v SCU heaps of fun, the main event good if not a little long), but there's still a lot of indy-riffic stuff on the shows and they definitely need to tighten up their production. There were a heap of miscues etc that they need to address moving forward too.

It's so hard to get really enthused about it when the NJPW G1 tournament is just blowing everything else out of the water right now.

I know a lot of reaction was that the show was underwhelming, but I enjoyed it. The only match I didn't care for was the women's match. It was sloppy. Brandi Rhodes just isn't that good in the ring.

Here's where I'm at with AEW at the moment:

Pros:
They've got an incredible tag team scene at a time where that is hard to come by. And the teams feel like real teams, not randos thrown together.

Their top level of main event guys are all incredibly talented.

The Joshi workers all seem super talented and working really had to impress.

MJF is the best heel in all of professional wrestling at the moment. He is the most naturally hatable worker in a generation.

Cons:
Announcing is really bad. Alex Marvez does not need to be there, and J.R. is done. He's old, he's slow, he's tired, he's cranky, and he just doesn't have it anymore. Excalibur is good. There should be a two man booth with him and someone else. But Ross and Marvez are not those guys.

Production issues. The production quality is still really lacking. The camera guys miss tons of stuff, to an almost inexucable level. Visual fidelity still feels off as well. They did fix some of the issues with music during FftF, where the past two shows it had been nearly inaudible. So they are aware.

Too many spotfests. Too many of the matches at Fight for the Fallen felt interchangeable. Very indie, very "gotta get my spots in" kind of wrestling. I'm noticing a lot of these guys aren't great at selling either and, not to sound like Jim Cornette, but often it doesn't feel like there's a story being told or psychology being used.

Too much goofiness. First let me say, I don't mind comedy wrestling at all. But I think it's not working very well for them at the moment. I think they feel beholden to it because they credit Being the Elite with a lot of their success as a brand, and the humor there is obviously very goofy. But what works on a YouTube show is not the same as what works on a wrestling show. Stuff like the Librarian gimmick isn't working.

Non-Joshi women's workers have not impressed so far. Brandi is not good and does not need to be in a ring.

They decided at some point prior to Double or Nothing that Hangman Page was going to be their guy as far as building a main event face goes, and I just don't see it. I mean, he's fine. He isn't objectionable or anything. But I do not get a star quality vibe from him and don't think he should be the inaugural champion.

Overall, I will say my hype is somewhat diminished. I kind of expected them to have a more polished product by this point but it still feels like they're finding their way. There have been small things, too, that lead me to believe there's some right hand not knowing what the left hand is doing stuff going on backstage. Both Matt Jackson and Kenny Omega have had public "I don't know who made that decision backstage, but we'll fix it right away" moments on Twitter.

They've got till October to get it all together, and very well might. But after a very strong showing with Double or Nothing, I do feel like some pretty obvious shortcomings were exposed with Fyter Fest and Fight for the Fallen.

It’s Official:

Cody Rhodes, The Young Bucks and Hangman Page have officially announced All Elite Wrestling, with their first event of 2019:

Tony Khan of the Jacksonville Jaguars has gotten together with the members of Being The Elite and have parlayed the success of BTE’s first event “All In” into a new promotion.

There is speculation of multiple TV deal options including WGN as well as heavy involvement from Jim Ross and Chris Jericho. A trademark has been filed for Tuesday Night Dynamite as well and could be a perfect slot for the promotion.

I felt now is the time to start a new discussion thread for this new promotion. The other Wrasslin thread is basically all WWE. With the incredibly poor product they have been putting out, It could be time to make a big move for AEW and there is tremendous buzz!

If you are unfamiliar with these guys, I suggest going to YouTube and watching their show “Being The Elite”. It is quite frankly the best bit of wrestling entertainment being produced today.

So let’s get it rolling! Besides Kenny Omega and Marty Scurll, who else do you think could make the jump to AEW in 2019!?
Thought about starting who is excited to watch AEW THREAD tonight. Glad I didn't seeing there is one already. Great first match. Brings fond memories of watching Nitro on T.N.T.
Update looked at N.X.T for a second they stink. Typical W.W.E always over the top cartoonist.
