There is a running quote on this forum that has been in place for years. It is unchanged and reflects poor coaching considering we have signed big names to to answer the question and have gotten nothing from the position.

"Can He Play Safety?".
The answer is "maybe"

Can we coach up the secondary?
The answer is no.

Lattimore's regression and Jenoris' struggles is a clear sign that these coaches suck for real. Latt became a ProBowler using the skillset he learned at Ohio. Both of the Jenkins were elite ProBowlers with their former teams and both look lost in this defense sometimes.

If not for an amazing solo stop by Davenport on a crucial 3rd down, we would have nothing good to say about the defensive game plan. Some will say, " but we won, can you just be happy about that?", to which my reply is, of course. But if you can't recognize the glaring problem that is Allen and Glenn, then how can you really expect to not have your heart broken in the most epic ways.

So, do you think Payton should fire them now, or wait until the season is over?

Is anyone out there kidding themselves that this defense can get the team through the playoffs?

The fact is, though going about it differently, and having some slow starts, the offense is producing at a high enough level (points) to support a run at a championship. The defense is on the complete opposition end of the spectrum. As things are it's a question if we can maintain beyond .500 and if we do an get to the playoffs this defense will get crushed.

Something needs to change or the defense is essentially going to negate everything the offense does.

Heck, I'm worried about the Bears on the road. If we play like last week this probably shapes up as another nail biter.

He's brought in coaches in the past. He did that to Rob Ryan, ironically by bringing in Allen and forcing him on to Ryan.

I don't know who it should be but he could try the same on Allen. But really, it's probably complicated. He needs to be be having those open/honest/direct conversations with his players and coaches and figure out what's going to make it better. Is it simplifying things? More man D?

But he's close you where you have to intervene, if he's not already intervening, because the season rides on the defense as it usually has in most years.

I'm not playing the stupid card bobad, I'm pointing out that they are the problem. And I'd definetely fire them both come seasons end.

I'm disappointed in our defense too, but I'm careful about what I wish for.

Does DA and Glenn have enough autonomy to be responsible for the defense, or is Payton forcing them into schemes and players that prevent them from coaching their own philosophy? I honestly don't know, but seems to me Payton is a micromanager. If DA and AG do have good autonomy, they should be on the hot seat the remainder of the season.

Bears appear to be "decent" and I am concerned about this game, but mainly because of the painted, mud field and the weather. Forecasts show it to be above freezing ( which is good ) but it should be windy. Our passing and kicking games are likely to struggle.

I think there are other equal explanations that need exploration...

Perhaps, we just dont understand the role of Safety in the modern PI Heavy - No Contact NFL?

We are in an era of football where we predominantly play 5 DBs and only 1 or 2 LBers. We heavily rotate our DL with 6 or 7 guys getting 45% or more of the snaps on the front line. It is possible that "we" are the ones that need to change the way we think?

If we are expecting Sammy Knight to rise again, perhaps it is our expectations that need altering.

I choose not to feed into these threads due to the reposts on the inevitable Superbowl thread to follow in the coming months đź‘Ť
In that case I hope to see this thread gets bumped come February and I am forced to eat crow, which I will not hide from
