Tyrann Mathieu and Saints to re-visit talks (1 Viewer)

He’s a hybrid he played QB in high school then became a receiver after committing to UT he switched to CB and played safety. But DA said he see’s him as a corner. I really didn’t like the pick but after watching tape he reminds me of CGJ with how aggressive he plays. He’s not afraid to lay that hat while hitting you.
Our boundary corner depth is Adebo, Lattimore, and Harris.

We needed a 4th guy. Particularly a high ceiling developmental guy. Not sure how he can handle crossing, comeback routes with his agility scores.

Not sure we will be able to pay him what he wants, but I like the idea that the Saints are 'revisiting' our interest in him. With how the draft turned out it is a good move and if we had the ability to sign one, either Mathieu or Landry, my vote would be for Mathieu. His signing would keep our defense in the tdop 10 if not higher this year.

We have the cap space. We have around $20 million in cap space right now. So, it's really just a question of if they want to spend it on Mathieu or if they want to carry it over into next year to start cutting down on our cap deficit.

As we all know it comes down to the money. I believe the Saints will be offering a tad more and a tad more guaranteed now.
Tbh, I wouldn't offer him too much more. His asking price has clearly been too high, otherwise he'd be signed somewhere already. Just hope he'll come down enough to make it worth our while.

I'd love to have him, but at a price.

What do I know, but if we can get him for 9 million +/- I would do that deal in a New York minute!

That's just the expected bonus. Not sure what the base salaries would be or how long of a contract he is looking. My guess his he is looking in the range of $10 to $13 million AAV and probably a two or three year deal. Nick reported a few weeks ago that Mathieu was willing to wait for a team to have a need in training camp to get what he wants. Whether that's still true or if he would be willing to play for a little less here, I don't know.

Yeah, ultimately, the guaranteed money is the biggest part, but the devil is in the details.

I read Nick's tweet wrong, thanks for highlighting that he was talking about Bonus plus base. Still a 3 year contract prorating the Bonus and salary should keep his 2022 costs reasonable and well within our available space!
