I don’t even want him on the practise squad. He’s awful and has shown zero growth since we drafted him. He’s had enough time and had enough chances. I never want to see him on the field as a Saints QB, even in preseason let alone a competitive game. If worst comes to worst and we were down to our 3rd string QB then I’d take anyone over him. I know it’s only preseason and the win/loss doesn’t matter but he’s gonna get people injured with his crazy inaccurate passes and I still want to notch up at least one win before the regular season starts. It’s impossible to judge any of our other offensive players with Ian Book as our QB. We can’t fully judge the O-Line when he just stands there like a statue and we can’t judge our receivers etc with his erratic throws.

I get that but we rarely give up on a guy we draft (unless he's beaten out by another guy). Putting on PS means he's not on the active roster and from what I can tell the guy from Miss. St. is not even getting reps yet.

He was drafted last year.

I wasn't ready to move on from Book (yet), as I felt he was an equal prospect, but already on the roster and requiring no further assets to acquire.

But IF the Saints brass felt that a QB was a worthwhile investment in this draft, I wanted it to be Matt Corral or Desmond Ridder. Those 2 were the only QBs who seemed to elevate their team, and have "it" factors. And now they're with the Panthers and Falcons. Jesus....I hope that doesn't bite us in the arse for the next 10-15 years!
Somehow I think one of those 2 if not both will bite us.

I didn't think he passed the eyeball test when we got to see him last year, and nothing from the other night changes that assessment. I can see keeping him on the roster for the next couple of weeks to get through preseason, but I haven't seen anything that makes me think he deserves a roster spot, and I'm not convinced there aren't better options for the practice squad. He just doesn't have the tools to be an NFL quarterback, not even a backup. It is what it is.

That doesn't necessarily make him a wasted pick, though. When you're looking for a quarterback you have to take a few chances to see if guys will pan out, knowing that most don't. It's just the cost of doing business when you need a quarterback -- and swinging and missing on a fourth rounder is much better than swinging and missing on guys in the top five of the draft.

When it comes to Book he’s not getting beat by another guy he’s beating his self with his performance.

Nah, we passed on Bailey Zappe this year. That kid is basically a Pennington clone. Smart as hell, accurate, wiffle ball bat for an arm.
A chad Pennington wouldn't survive todays NFL. secondaries are so much better and quicker now.

Finally watched the game. Man you guys weren't lying. Not a single iota of growth from this guy.

He throws with the low arm strength that Brees had in his last 2 years, but without the anticipation and accuracy. Brees was a master so no one expects that level, but damn.

When he does manage to make a read and get the ball out the receiver has to stand there waiting forever giving the defender time to close. Even on slants he throws TO the receiver instead of in front. There was almost no YAC because of poorly placed balls.

I am happy to keep him around on the PS and see if he can improve with another year under his belt, but he should be much further along, IMO.

Glad we got Dalton in case Winston cant go.

Yeah I was disappointed. I expected some improvement from one to two years. But I was left with disappointment

Book was a Sean Payton draft pick in a world where Winston and Hill were battling to be a starter. Winston's contractual future with the Saints was uncertain. Hill's ability to be the guy was uncertain but deserving of the shot Payton promised. Book was a guy. 2021 quarterbacks drafted before Book: first round (Trevor Lawrence (1), Zach Wilson (2), Trey Lance (3), Justin Fields (11), Mac Jones (15)), third round (Kellen Mond (66), Davis Mills (67)). Then Ian Book fourth round 133. (One more QB was taken Sam Ehlinger to the Colts 218 in the sixth round.)

Saints had the 28th pick in the first. All the top QBs were gone. Book was taking a shot.

What I see in the preseason is the Saints are being cautious with Winston and every major player on the team. They are comfortable in what they have in Dalton. The league has changed how it does preseason. Starters do not play much if at all. Book's playing time is a byproduct of if Book has upside and cutting him is going to be a giant mistake, let's see because we plan on having Winston and Dalton as our two official QBs on the roster knowing in a pinch Taysom Hill could play emergency quarterback. It makes zero sense to waste a roster spot on Ian Book unless we are certain he has a strong future.

Preseason game one and two showed it was not just having so many starters injured in the Miami game last year, it was Ian Book too in why the offense looked insufferable. Book is not close to be a starter maybe he stays on our practice squad. Maybe he catches on as some other team's developmental prospect, but at least the Saints had a body to put out there for quarterback in the preseason. The player has to learn to step up in the pocket and keep looking down field in game action. He has one more shot next week. Then I expect Book to get cut but they will do so knowing they gave him a fair chance and did not risk injury to other quarterbacks they plan on playing in the regular season.
