Nick Underhill’s concern with Saints O-Line might be “heightened” (1 Viewer)

Wouldn't be a bad idea to bring in Jason Peters to see if he could fill in when needed. He wouldn't need to be a starter, just a good quality backup.

This and also I’m curious if anyone here has kept an eye on OL rich teams this preseason? I wonder if there are any gems that could be mined come cut down day.

This was buried in Duncan's article today....don't like that word "continued..."

.. Trevor Penning continued to struggle in pass protection. He was beaten for a sack by Carl Granderson during team drills and also lost decisively to Payton Turner in one-on-one pass rush drills.

Our DL has been getting good pressure in camp after a down year last season, hopefully it’s due to the talent on the field more than it is due to deficiencies on the OL.

Trevor is very vulnerable to the quick inside move, Carl was beating him last year. I'm pulling for the guy, and I think he will work out. But, it begs the question "why draft a run blocking LT from a small school, and expect him to start right away?" As much as we invest in the passing game around hear, pass blocking would have been tops on my list when drafting a LT.

Because he has elite athletic traits that should allow him to become a good pass blocker.

So who would you have drafted (that we were in a position to draft, of course)?

I can tell you what I would have done, is put up more draft capital to get one of the better pass blocking LTs, and I would have secured a better option in FA than Hurst at LT to hold it down. I can tell you what I wouldn't have done is trade up to get a run blocking LT from a small school, who wasn't an established pass protector to start right away. For our high priced FA QB. I'm sure it will work out in the end, just not the way I would have done it.

Hurst was already on our roster, we signed him as a FA in 2021 for depth. Who did you want us to sign instead that year, when we had Armstead on the roster? In 2022 Armstead walked in free agency for a very large deal so we had a large hole to fill at LT. We addressed it with a very good prospect who checks every box you want physically and has the tools to become a good pass protector. Everyone knew he was strong in run blocking but needed time to develop as a pass blocker. Our high priced FA QB was playing for the Raiders at the time of us drafting him, that played zero factor in going up to get him. Drafting high quality offensive lineman is a good strategy regardless of who is playing quarterback or what type of offense is being run. Penning went where he was projected.

Was the Oline weak last year because of being bad?
Or was it play calling and how long the QB held the ball.

I'd like to see the average time we gave the QB to throw.

An let's be honest.. you aren't going to run the ball if no one respects the pass.

How many games did the guy that everyone alleges "holds the ball too long" play for that to be an indictment on the lines perception for the season?

Did Dalton hold the ball too long or something?
