Nick Underhill’s concern with Saints O-Line might be “heightened” (1 Viewer)

This was buried in Duncan's article today....don't like that word "continued..."

.. Trevor Penning continued to struggle in pass protection. He was beaten for a sack by Carl Granderson during team drills and also lost decisively to Payton Turner in one-on-one pass rush drills.
Trevor is very vulnerable to the quick inside move, Carl was beating him last year. I'm pulling for the guy, and I think he will work out. But, it begs the question "why draft a run blocking LT from a small school, and expect him to start right away?" As much as we invest in the passing game around hear, pass blocking would have been tops on my list when drafting a LT.

Because he has elite athletic traits that should allow him to become a good pass blocker.

So who would you have drafted (that we were in a position to draft, of course)?

I can tell you what I would have done, is put up more draft capital to get one of the better pass blocking LTs, and I would have secured a better option in FA than Hurst at LT to hold it down. I can tell you what I wouldn't have done is trade up to get a run blocking LT from a small school, who wasn't an established pass protector to start right away. For our high priced FA QB. I'm sure it will work out in the end, just not the way I would have done it.

Hurst was already on our roster, we signed him as a FA in 2021 for depth. Who did you want us to sign instead that year, when we had Armstead on the roster? In 2022 Armstead walked in free agency for a very large deal so we had a large hole to fill at LT. We addressed it with a very good prospect who checks every box you want physically and has the tools to become a good pass protector. Everyone knew he was strong in run blocking but needed time to develop as a pass blocker. Our high priced FA QB was playing for the Raiders at the time of us drafting him, that played zero factor in going up to get him. Drafting high quality offensive lineman is a good strategy regardless of who is playing quarterback or what type of offense is being run. Penning went where he was projected.

Was the Oline weak last year because of being bad?
Or was it play calling and how long the QB held the ball.

I'd like to see the average time we gave the QB to throw.

An let's be honest.. you aren't going to run the ball if no one respects the pass.

How many games did the guy that everyone alleges "holds the ball too long" play for that to be an indictment on the lines perception for the season?

Did Dalton hold the ball too long or something?

Trade tqs to Denver for either OL or pick

Trade winston to whomever for OL depth.
This is scary because Underhill generally knows more than the public and the public knows this:

Ramczyk: 77.9
Ruiz: 56.6
McCoy: 61.2
Peat: 50.6
Hurst: 63.2
Penning: 73.6

That is a very weak interior line, and Penning is still developing/unknown.

He is concerned, I am terrified.
Me too. But we may get the depth we seek before kickoff week 1.

You realize the odds of teams sending us quality OL depth is really slim, right? We can't just snap our fingers and make teams trade us quality offensive linemen. Especially for someone like Tre'Quan, who is both injured and likely on the roster bubble even if he wasn't.

The top 3 tackles were top 9 picks. Going up from 19 would cost the farm. Your only shot would be to use the Olave pick and trade up and not having Olave.

I'll take Olave and Penning 10 out of 10 times over a guy like Cross who would cost draft capital, Olave, and probably 19 in the process.

We shall see. I mean, you're 100% right but am I 100% wrong?

Yes, but besides size, what elite pass protecting traits have you seen?
Powerful hands and a heavy anchor. When he latched and drops his anchor, pass rushers get no where.

He’s a smooth mover. He’s not getting beat around the edge. He’s struggled to redirect on inside moves. He’ll get better.

That’s what I can to ask. How many starters played Sunday? I agree this looks more like a depth issue - which is not a small issue considering how banged up our linemen tend to get.

However, this offense seems to really rely on linemen that have a lot of versatility and can play numerous positions. So I feel like what we might see in preseason from the o-line isn’t totally reflective of what we’ll see in regular season.

At least that’s what we can hope.
Completely agree. Preseason is like buying a lottery ticket. Everyone buys one thinking they are gonna hit the jack pot. Hell, the First Ball {1st reg season game} has even played and we are assuming all is based off of past drawings {Preseason}.
I am not actually knowledgeable enough on lineman, except my thinking is IF PENNING has early problems that place Carr in too many of harms way, Wouldn't they use Stunts/Pulling, to sorta hide any deficiencies? Doesn't this allow him to run towards another area of Help?
