Nick Underhill’s concern with Saints O-Line might be “heightened” (2 Viewers)

Depth at this point depends on Saldiveri and Storm Norton development as well as Peat's health. Peat will be backup LT and LG, Sal LG/RG, and Norton RT. So yeah, ton of question marks. I think backup Center is fine for now w/ Garcia.

Norton is 29 and has 18 career starts, bouncing around the league since 2017. Whatever room he has left for further development is certainly questionable at this point.

Peat will be your #6 and the true weak link is #7. I think Hurst is going to play really well at G. Our OL will be mediocre in the middle, but Carr has shown the ability to escape the pocket and throw on the move. We haven't had that in two years.
I think we’d be Ok with Hurst as LT and Penning @ guard. I know that’s not his future, but I like the idea of having elite guards to keep the inner pocket clean. Penning didn’t play at all last year, and no one was constantly complaining about hurst getting beat giving up sacks etc. Penning seems like the type that learns by doing, ie reps. I do believe that once he learns his position inside and out, he’ll be fixture for the next decade.

No way. Hurst is barely serviceable at LT last season. Penning will get better as he continues to get snaps. Literally every rookie LT on his class struggled during the first half of the season and eventually got better. Penning is essentially a rookie and will continue to get better and better with every game under his belt. You don't hinder his development and experience for a minimal gain in the short term. Let him take him lumps early on and get him ready for December, January, and possibly February.

If depth is the issue. Half them teams in the league would love that problem. Many teams have trouble fielding 5 quality starters

I agree in theory about letting the rookie takes his lumps. But not at LT, he whiffs once, and Carr is in the tent. However, I defer to the coaches to figure out if he’s serviceable enough to start.

I don’t necessarily disagree with you regarding Hursts play at LT last year, but there needs to be some stats to prove it. I’m only going off my memory.

Depth is the issue, as many have stated. And it's highly unlikely we find it via cuts and guys that can't make teams--unless maybe its a UDFA type that we had a really high grade on. Either way it's not gonna save us when we lose a starter a two, something that is simply gonna happen at some point. I really love the idea of getting Jason Peters as an insurance policy. Also I'd be amazed if Storm Norton makes this team, it would really speak to how desperate the situation for our reserves is...

Underhill's assessment just proves that he, like all of us, are not perfect. A couple of weeks ago he projected Afernee Orji as an almost lock at LB. Since then he's still in Orji's corner, but has tamped-down his enthusiasm.

I've seen far more positive reviews of our O-line for a variety of sources... than Debbie Downer Descriptions.

Be that as it may, I place a lot of credibility in Nick's opinions. By and large, he's a straight shooter, isn't a homer, and is a great analyst for us to rely on.

:gosaints:

Hurst didn’t make PFF top 32 OT list. I think most would consider him a bottom 8 LT and he was paid as such (34th for the position).

Wouldn't be a bad idea to bring in Jason Peters to see if he could fill in when needed. He wouldn't need to be a starter, just a good quality backup.

This and also I’m curious if anyone here has kept an eye on OL rich teams this preseason? I wonder if there are any gems that could be mined come cut down day.

This was buried in Duncan's article today....don't like that word "continued..."

.. Trevor Penning continued to struggle in pass protection. He was beaten for a sack by Carl Granderson during team drills and also lost decisively to Payton Turner in one-on-one pass rush drills.

Our DL has been getting good pressure in camp after a down year last season, hopefully it’s due to the talent on the field more than it is due to deficiencies on the OL.
