they weren't very good, but they weren't historically bad..And then what happened in 2014, 2015, and 2016?
they weren't very good, but they weren't historically bad..
ThisDidn't he also win one as DC with the Giants?
Forcing Spags to keep the personnel Payton wanted him to have was a set up for failure.
The flex worked well in Dallas. The difference was Randy White and Jethro Pugh were the starting DT's. It's theDick Nolan, who became head coach.
Dick was well respected, like Spags, but he wanted to be an innovator. He married himself to the "Flex" defense. He took a decent defense and moved his best lineman back two yards with the linebackers. The idea was to free him from engagement with the offensive lineman at the beginning of the play so he could have better angles for stunting and more momentum when he attacked the line. The problem was offenses soon learned to run right at the flex. Guaranteed yardage. So when he got full control he went full Flex and the Saints went from an 8-8 ascending team to 1-15. That's the worst I ever remember.
I also said "other", and Abramowicz was the guy I thought of. In all fairness, Carl Smith did very little with more, but had playoff appearances to show for it. Winfred Tubbs and Sammy Knight were balling out on the defensive side, but NO ONE emerged under Abramowicz. Not sure if that's a symptom or a cause, but "you are who your record says you are"....and by that measure, Abramowicz gets the nod in my eyes.I said other. Danny Abramowicz. Not sure if it's spelled right.
75 was the season HC John North was fired after the 7tth game. The last 7 games were coachedI don't think they had "coordinators" in 1975, but whomever was in charge of that mess...
Food for thought:
How many Lombardi’s would the Saints have if their defense (with Brees) was middle of the pack?
Saints Defense: 2012 vs. 2015
The 2012 Saints defense was historically bad. The 2015 Saints defense might be historically worse...www.canalstreetchronicles.com
