He took a decent defense and moved his best lineman back two yards with the linebackers. The idea was to free him from engagement with the offensive lineman at the beginning of the play so he could have better angles for stunting and more momentum when he attacked the line. The problem was offenses soon learned to run right at the flex. Guaranteed yardage. So when he got full control he went full Flex and the Saints went from an 8-8 ascending team to 1-15. That's the worst I ever remember.

Spags defenses are sound. However it requires good pass rushers from the front 4. He had that
with the Giants. Cam Jordan was the only one he had his one year here.

The flex worked well in Dallas. The difference was Randy White and Jethro Pugh were the starting DT's. It's the
same in any era Talent > Scheme

I said other. Danny Abramowicz. Not sure if it's spelled right.

I also said "other", and Abramowicz was the guy I thought of. In all fairness, Carl Smith did very little with more, but had playoff appearances to show for it. Winfred Tubbs and Sammy Knight were balling out on the defensive side, but NO ONE emerged under Abramowicz. Not sure if that's a symptom or a cause, but "you are who your record says you are"....and by that measure, Abramowicz gets the nod in my eyes.

75 was the season HC John North was fired after the 7tth game. The last 7 games were coached
by interim HC Ernie Hefferle. Both only won 1 game that season.
