Didn't rob Ryan field historically bad defense one yrar?

Dick Nolan, who became head coach.

Dick was well respected, like Spags, but he wanted to be an innovator. He married himself to the "Flex" defense. He took a decent defense and moved his best lineman back two yards with the linebackers. The idea was to free him from engagement with the offensive lineman at the beginning of the play so he could have better angles for stunting and more momentum when he attacked the line. The problem was offenses soon learned to run right at the flex. Guaranteed yardage. So when he got full control he went full Flex and the Saints went from an 8-8 ascending team to 1-15. That's the worst I ever remember.

Didn't he also win one as DC with the Giants?

Forcing Spags to keep the personnel Payton wanted him to have was a set up for failure.

Spags defenses are sound. However it requires good pass rushers from the front 4. He had that
with the Giants. Cam Jordan was the only one he had his one year here.

The flex worked well in Dallas. The difference was Randy White and Jethro Pugh were the starting DT's. It's the
same in any era Talent > Scheme

I said other. Danny Abramowicz. Not sure if it's spelled right.
I also said "other", and Abramowicz was the guy I thought of. In all fairness, Carl Smith did very little with more, but had playoff appearances to show for it. Winfred Tubbs and Sammy Knight were balling out on the defensive side, but NO ONE emerged under Abramowicz. Not sure if that's a symptom or a cause, but "you are who your record says you are"....and by that measure, Abramowicz gets the nod in my eyes.

I don't think they had "coordinators" in 1975, but whomever was in charge of that mess...

75 was the season HC John North was fired after the 7tth game. The last 7 games were coached
by interim HC Ernie Hefferle. Both only won 1 game that season.

Food for thought: 🤔

How many Lombardi’s would the Saints have if their defense (with Brees) was middle of the pack?

:gosaints:

How many would we have won if Sean Payton wasn't trying to score in 3 plays and allowing that historically bad defense a chance to rest?

How many could we have won if Jim Mora didn't handcuff Carl Smith by running Prevent Defense and forcing him to call 22 Dive every time we have a 10 point lead?

How many can we win if Dennis Allen actually puts pressure on the QB in the 4th Quarter and doesn't keep playing the modern prevent defense?

I'd say Carl Smith but Spags ruined our chance at multiple Championships. It's so bizarre to hear announcers praise him now
One day I'm going to actually get it through all of yalls thick skulls that Carl Smith is not to blame for Jim Mora's ultra conservative coaching style.

Literally every game we were winning we went into prevent defense and started running 22 DIVE over and over again. His name is Jim Mora.

Didn't Carl Smith invent the "prevent offense"? :p

Nope, his name is Jim Mora.

Jim: "Carl, why would we try to get the ball to Eric Martin when we can get 2 yards up the middle and kill 1:40 seconds? and I can just call Prevent Defense to kill another 12 seconds? There's 12 minutes left in the game we have to milk it so we can protect our 9 point lead."

Jim: "Dadgumit, they scored 10 points on us... please save us Morten Anderson."

Carl: "Guess I'll go win a super bowl and make Russel Wilson into a star until I leave, then later I'll help Geno Smith turn into a pretty good QB LATE in his career."

I dunno, We also had Sed Ellis (maybe not a probowler, but was solid) Akem Hicks, Junior Galette (crazy sure, but good on the field) and Will Smith. that's not a scub list by any means..
