Nailed it, imo. I have no problem with coaches holding people accountable and getting fired up. That was just weird tho.

yeah i think in hindsight, Rizzi would admit it was a bad look- especially on TV.

I think someone mentioned the fact he was the ST coach, probably allotted him the "familiarity" with Hayball that led to him getting that incensed, but you gotta pick your spots. And that was, at the very least, not a good look.

Especially when you give the impression of an uneven hand...coming apart on Hayball, when there are 24 other guys not performing well, can lead to what looks like favoritism. He didnt jaw at any WR that dropped crucial passes. Nor did he lose it like that on Grupe missing FG.

So why Hayball in that moment? Frustration as @BBarnes mentioned boiling over at the overall performance.

Wouldnt surprise me to learn Rizzi privately apologized to Hayball.

I find it ironic that we just got rid of a coach that nobody liked because he stood there with his tail between his legs not having the kahona’s to hold players accountable, and now people complain because Rizzi is doing what DA wouldn’t.

Why have multiple people posted this? As has been said several times, there is clearly a middle ground between the weak and passive DA approach and the Rizzi outburst.

An approach that holds players accountable but also doesn’t require another player coming in to calm things down would be great.

That's clearly your opinion on the matter. I think you're overlooking that Hayball plays on the unit Rizzi coaches. Payton would yell more at offensive players than defense. There's probably a tendency of coaches to get more quickly frustrated with players that aren't doing what they have directly coached them to do. I think that was as much a factor as any "pressure" he might have been feeling, but that's just my opinion.

We very well could both be right. I was not knocking him. I think any coach would feel a little pressure when they are; coaching in their first game on the road, their first game in front of their family and peers, their first game back in their hometown, and in a must-win game where they are playing horrible against the worst team in the league.

I agree that he will be more passionate with the sp teams unit because that is his "baby". Though they have been very middle of the pack all year, I get the emotion. 32 in avg. 28th in net. 26th in punt return yards

I'm confused on why this is receiving so much attention, this happens all the time at all levels of football....Coaches yelling at players.....who knew?

And why would anyone care what an old ex coach who never won a playoff game says?

I know and agree with all of that. I’m saying it was overboard for a guy that was trying too hard to make a play and tackle the guy. Those kind of outbursts should be for lack of hustle or effort, imo.

Yeah, but hustle is one thing and failing to do your job by ignoring what you’ve been coached to do, resulting in points - is a pretty serious issue. Hustle is fabulous for a football player to display - but at the expense of your assignment - it’s a pretty big problem.

It’s 11 guys having to handle their assignment on every play. One guy abandoned his assignment to freelance on the play and compromised the work of the other 10 guys.

If ever there was a reason to get you chewed out, it’s that.

I recommend anyone to watch some mic’d ups on Sean Payton and see how he talked to some of his players. Also perhaps google some clips of Nick Saban interacting with his players.

The coach’s job is to make sure all the guys are doing their assignments. When someone doesn’t do theirs, it’s almost impossible to win. It’s on the coach to correct that and sometimes you don’t have time to wait to do it.

Honestly, I wasn't too thrill about that either. There is a fine line with those type of behavior with coaches. In my many years of watching football I have seen a few coaches doing that and it didn't end well with their team. Ditka did it with Harbaugh. Parchell was hard nose but never to that extreme. Mora was brutally honest but never seen him go off on the sideline like that. The only person famous with that kind of outburst was Bobby Knight. Salute to Hayball for taking it. People might praise Rizzi for his more accountability approach but there is a thin line with that. These are men and not college or high school kids on the sideline.

That behavior with a punter is weak. Let him try that with Demario or AK when they don't do their job. They all miss assignments.

That action may have demonstrated why he is out at the end of the season as if he had a chance anyway.

I think an added element to this thread is the sight of ol' Mora himself on a social media network. It's akin to having George Washington or Abe Lincoln suddenly appear online and start giving opinions on matters of the day

Payton chewed guys out yes but Rizzi did look a little... unhinged... To me and I don't remember Payton ever looking that same way.

You sound insane. As a coach, I praise on the spot when it happens. And I chew behinds out on the spot. You sound like you approve of fourth place medals.

Rizzi would have chewed him out the same exact way if he was still a special teams coach. At the end of the day, it was a special teams error that would have resulted in the same response regardless of what his title says.

My only problem with it was who he was yelling at and who he didn't yell at all game long. Carr throws a horrible pick, nothing. Receivers run the wrong routes and miss blocks, nothing. Defense constantly missing tackles and giving up on plays (looking at you Chase Young), nothing. But the punter, the littlest guy on the team, makes a mistake during one of his 7 punts and he gets lit up. Heck, maybe direct the frustration at the offense that has a rookie punting 7 times against one of the worst teams in the league instead. It was bad form from Rizzi and I don't think he has the right judgement and temperament during the game to be a HC. He completely lost his composure and while I have seen other coaches angry and snap at players, it's rare to see what Rizzi did.
