Jim Mora didn’t like Rizzi chewing out Matthew Hayball (1 Viewer)

When you are bad and win games by 3 you can’t give up punt returns for TDs if there wasn’t a penalty we loose that game

Not sure what was wrong with the punt was it bad placement due to a punter going off script or just a bad kick

Bad kick happens kicking to wrong place can be not following the plan and did he earn him on the first punt that that’s not what they are wanting punt wise

He looked like a very inexperienced HC that was feeling a lot of pressure bc we were performing badly against a JV team. Then on top of that the one group he thought he could count on was Sp teams and they just about let him down. He lost control for a moment. It was a bad look, and completely over the top, but you could obviously see he was feeling the pressure of that game.

Playing the worst team in the league.

Struggling against the worst team in the league.

All his friends and family at the game.

He wanted to win that game more than any game he’ll likely ever be a HC in, he just lost control for a second.

Not the end of the world, but still can’t happen. Not in that situation. It was borderline ridiculous.
That's clearly your opinion on the matter. I think you're overlooking that Hayball plays on the unit Rizzi coaches. Payton would yell more at offensive players than defense. There's probably a tendency of coaches to get more quickly frustrated with players that aren't doing what they have directly coached them to do. I think that was as much a factor as any "pressure" he might have been feeling, but that's just my opinion.

I guess with the snowflake era we are in now, Rizzi should have pulled him over, wrapped a arm over his shoulder, and said now Matthew, these punts aren't going where we designed. And you got caught up in the midst of all the players so you couldn't make a play on the returner. So what I need you to do next time is execute OK. Now, go get some gatorade and watch the film and try to do better. You're ok Matthew. You will be fine.
He got his butt chewed out. He will live.
You sure you're not a flake yourself, having spelled out all that snow in perfect diction? ;)

Easy to criticize it from all angles when we're outside the arena -- even for the old warhorse Mora. When juxtaposed against all other issues this team has, I think of the words an old boss of mine would use to describe it. "It's just teets on a bull," she'd say.

I'm confused first we needed a coach that hold players accountable and be animated on the sideline, a quote "Alpha Male" now we need a coach that needs to keep his cool and stay relax and coach players up quietly. Talking about snow flakes like seems everyone complains about everything

I can promise you I'm not a snowflake. I've been called out before. My kids all played sports and got tongue lashings. Part of the game. Got to grow up and take it. Which I think Hayball did.

It was because Hayball ran up field and tried to make the tackle with the rest of the coverage team.
Hayball was probably supposed to be the last line of defense against a TD.
It was a big mistake, I'm not sure if it was the correct time and player to chew out but I do understand why Rizzi did it.

It was over the top. Picked one of maybe 2 guys he could beat up on the team to do that too. I thought it was weak. Wasn’t a lack of effort. To me that’s the kind of thing that should generate that kind of outburst.
Actually, what Hayball did on that play directly resulted in a TD - that was thankfully called back for holding.

Hayball was supposed to stay back like a deep safety and attempt to drive the returner to the sidelines as a “last line of defense”. Instead, he ran ahead and vacated the deep “safety” spot and entered the scrum and actually got in the way of two potential tacklers.

So the kick was only half his job and his mistake could have cost a TD in a game that was won by 3 points.

We have apparently gotten very used to an emotionless walking corpse as our coach.

Also, Rizzi was special teams coach and spent the first half of the season in the ST room with Hayball. So if there’s anyone Rizzi should be comfortable blowing up, it’s him.

Yeah, because there's no middle ground, it's either the hysterical fit Rizzi threw or the ridiculousness that you posted. There's definitely no sensible alternative in between those two things.

For most NFL fans they don't know him well. From the outside seeing him go off like that looks more like a lunatic than a great coach getting his players for their mistakes. I have seen great coaches getting into players faces and I am fine with that. But what Rizzi did was just over the top. If you don't follow or a fan of the team, you might think he is an unknown who hasn't accomplished anything to earn that right to act like that.

I know and agree with all of that. I’m saying it was overboard for a guy that was trying too hard to make a play and tackle the guy. Those kind of outbursts should be for lack of hustle or effort, imo.

Nailed it, imo. I have no problem with coaches holding people accountable and getting fired up. That was just weird tho.

Anyone who is shocked to see a special teams coach go ape on a player has never watched special teams coaches before. Most of their job is to motivate bottom of roster players to smash into each other as hard as they can. 99% of the time they are the most unhinged employee on the team. I'm sure Rizzi does that all of the time, but usually has fewer cameras on him.
Maybe it made sense to have him as interim coach since his energy was a much needed contrast to DA, but he's not a long term solution and I think (hope) everyone understands that.

yeah i think in hindsight, Rizzi would admit it was a bad look- especially on TV.

I think someone mentioned the fact he was the ST coach, probably allotted him the "familiarity" with Hayball that led to him getting that incensed, but you gotta pick your spots. And that was, at the very least, not a good look.

Especially when you give the impression of an uneven hand...coming apart on Hayball, when there are 24 other guys not performing well, can lead to what looks like favoritism. He didnt jaw at any WR that dropped crucial passes. Nor did he lose it like that on Grupe missing FG.

So why Hayball in that moment? Frustration as @BBarnes mentioned boiling over at the overall performance.

Wouldnt surprise me to learn Rizzi privately apologized to Hayball.
