A little trivia for the house:

Lamar Jackson signed his deal in 2023 for an average of $52M/yr. Going into 2025, where does that rank among NFL QBs average annual compensation?

Top three? Top five? Top ten? Or out of the top ten?

LINK - scroll down to where it reads "See, Jackson currently ranks XXX among QBs ..."

8th. Which is kind of the point. They are going to pay Purdy more than Lamar Jackson and as much as Josh Allen and he's not close to the QB that either is. Purdy is a solid game manager that can get the ball to playmakers but Lamar and Allen can and have taken over games.

Not for long. Jackson counts for over $74 million against the Ravens' cap in both 2026 AND 2027 (where's Nick Wright?). Jackson's got another extension and payday coming very soon.

You guys know how this goes, though? Remember when $20M/yr was crazy money? Wasn't that long ago.

It’s a heck no for me. It’s great to get a young QB in the draft and build around them, but not a great idea to pay one on their second or third contracts. People will point to Brees, but he is the exception that breaks the rule and he was injured when we signed him.

We need to draft a guy, no good way around it.

I get that the numbers continue to rise, but you have to make sure you spend those numbers on the right QB and IMO, Purdy is just not that QB. He's a Carr or Geno Smith level QB. You don't pay those guys the same thing as Joe Burrow and Josh Allen.

If they paid Purdy in the range of $30 to $40 million AAV, it might makes some sense if there are not better options. But at $55 million AAV, I'd trade him for picks and then look for a bridge QB for a year and then draft a QB high next year. Especially since S.F. is tearing their team apart and is likely to be bad with or without Purdy.

IMO tanking while given $55 million AAV to a mediocre QB is the worst of both worlds.

The problem is that I don't think Purdy counts as finding your QB and $55 million AAV per year is a lot of money to pay for a guy that is not your QB. I think they won with him because his cheap contract allowed them to pay guys like Deebo and McCaffery. But, you can't really do those things if you are paying Purdy $55 million AAV.

And, if you are tearing the team apart and let Purdy go, they are likely to pick high next year so they can draft a young QB. I'd feel different if they were keeping there other players to go for it with Purdy, but that's not what they are doing.
But they aren't gutting that offense - they've mostly let a few very good defensive players coming up for their second contracts go. They're obviously working on the basis that they can replace them.

We disagree on Purdy's importance to them. If he was a non-factor, they'd still be starting either Jimmy G or (sniggers) Trey Lance. They've got better by going with Purdy and when he was injured in the playoffs a couple of seasons ago, they were sunk. It's really that simple for me.

If you can’t put up good numbers unless you have Christian McCaffrey, George Kittle, Brandon Aiyuk, Deebo Samuel all healthy, then you’re not elite.
Purdy = Joe Flacco

Would not be shocked if the Niners took the tag route when the time comes and they draft another QB. I just don’t believe they are sold on him based on last season. IMO
