Saints making a push to sign Cooper Kupp [Cooper Kupp signs with Seahawks to a 3-year, $45 million deal]

Interesting. Must be a lot of QBs throwing the ball out of bounds these days.

Enjoy some sarcasm in your life. You probably a blast to be around. I still don’t like the idea of DC throwing the ball to Kupp. Maybe I could have been more accurate in saying Derek I like to throw hospital balls Carr. Make you feel better?

I'm estimating around 20m in space to start next year with rollover. Another 20mil in basic housekeeping moves, more depending on what they do. Another 40-50 mil in restructure potential. So, probably ~40mil readily available and 80+ mil with reasonable restructuring. That's guessing on Chase Young's numbers and the rest of the contracts currently provided. Still have to finish free agency though.
The have to fill a roster next season. OTC currently reflects $22 million in space in 2026 with 33 players under contract. Of those, 7 are league minimum futures contracts. So, that leaves 26 players. So, they need to fill half a roster with that space. Young, Reid, and Yiadom are not in that number, so likely will soon be negative. It is still way too early to project where we will stand when the 2026 league year begins, but will likely still need a good bit of work.

Looks like like once Young's contract gets added, almost all of the 2026 cap space will be gone-

Yeah I'm not including signings, but that's plenty enough to get it done. Like I said, it's probably around 40mil before you start restructuring. Around a mil per open roster spot. Just say 30 mil to fill the roster spots. You then have all that restructure potential to upgrade. They'll have a ton of options to do what they want. They won't be forced into anything like the Carr contract this year.

Kupp is interesting and for the right price whole probably be OK but with both Allen and Lockett sitting out there I have a hard time justifying his $12 - $15 million a year price tag. I’d still prefer to draft McMillan, get younger, and stay away from old, pricey, oft injured vets.

That's about what I figured. About 5 mil more in in 2026 than I guessed. You still have rollover from this year for now. The bigger salary just means more restructure potential. Depends a bit on void years.

Sounds good in a vacuum and I don’t necessarily disagree, but what if your pro scouts have a much higher grade on Kupp over Lockett, or Kupp fits a prototype the coaches want, or Keenan Allen’s people have indicated he doesn’t want to play for New Orleans?

There are a lot of factors that could be at play that have them wanting Kupp over the others.

Sure, but there is also a point where the contract demands by any of these guys don't make sense and don't fit into Loomis' plan for our salary cap money. I'm sure Loomis will do what he generally does. He'll set the number that he will go to and if it goes over that number they will be out and move onto the next option if there is one.

It also means they likely have an out in year two or year three if they feel that he isn't worth the money. Which year depends on any remaining or added void years.

But it's probably just click bait and not really his contract.

It will definitely be negative before any restructurings. There will not be enough roll over to cover the deficit. Unless Carr has a great year, he will likely provide pretty significant cap space once released but that will likely be after June 1. Plenty of restructure potential, but will need some to get compliant again next year.

Probably in year 3. Looks like year 1 and 2 fully guaranteed.

I thought I saw yesterday that there was a roster bonus that would be paid at the start of year 2 that would allow an out then, but I could be remembering wrong.

Anyway, it's at most a 2 year contract if he doesn't live up to expectations which is probably a good idea for a guy that could break out or could remain a bit above average.

If Katherine is not reporting accurately, that could be the case.

Exactly. And we will just pull from 2027…problem solved.
