Geez! This defense is playing lights out. We are on pace for over 50 Sacks on the year, over 20 turnovers. This is better than our Superbowl year, I believe. Man, we gotta give it up to this unit. I don't know what our rank is though. We've got to be a top 10 defense this year. For so long, it's been the offense. And, our offense ain't bad this year, and will get better with the return of Brees, but it's the defense and Special Teams that are impressing me. Dennis Allen and his staff have done an incredible job, especially since we now have the personnel he needed to run his defense. Remember, we had been drafting for Ryan's system. I'm so impressed. Geaux Saints

I went to try to find our Defensive Ranking, but couldn't find it. Does anyone know a site that lists the Defensive Rankings for the NFL, and not just statistic's?

The rankings are usually done just by total yards. So NFL.com will give you the option to list the stats by yards and whoever gives up the least per game is #1.

ETA: We are right at the league average in yards given up per game, coming in at #17 on oddsshark. But maybe they haven't calculated things after last night's game yet because NFL.com has us at 19.

Here is the NFL.com list:

Has us coming in at 19 on yds/game.

New England has far and away the best defense in the league, but haven't played anyone worth a damn either.

ETA: Our first downs allowed per game and third down percentage are pretty good - putting us in the top half of the league by those metrics.

The problem with defensive rankings is they just look at one statistic, total yards. It doesn't take take aways, points scored by the defense, sacks, & 4th down stops, & 3rd down conversion percentage into account. A QB ratingis based on everything. A defense is judged by the mass media on one thing. And it isn't even points allowed.

shoulda had 2 more turnovers except for some silly penalties

I get what you're saying, but there is a good reason the NFL uses total yards and not points allowed. Pick sixes and
safeties are the fault of the offense. Kick returns for Td's are the fault of special teams.

We also have to keep in mind we've giving up a lot of yards during garbage time when we were in a prevent. That's
going to affect the total yards stats.

But that one statistic alone is extremely misleading. No one even knows how good the Patriots, or the 49ers really are this season. I can't remember when tow teams have had such easy schedules to start a season. I mean the Patriots have played one possible good team so far. They may go all the way to the superbowl before they have to play a strong team on a neutral field, or on the road.

This is exactly why I don't put any stock in defensive rankings and go by the eye test. You can adjust the stats to rank by 3rd down percentage, yards given up per play, etc. but none of those paint the whole picture of how the defense is performing for the whole season or even an entire game. All of our defensive linemen having a sack last game is something you'll rarely see and that's the kind of thing I judge our defense on. Not to mention having an interception taken off the board on an offensive penalty. I mean, how often does some garbage like that occur?

Our D is playing lights out, regardless of what any of these rankings say.

We are only 5 weeks into the season. It'll take a full season to sort things out. I agree the Niners and Pats have played an easy
schedule. The Pats are in a weak division and won't be tested there. We'll know more about the Niners when they play the
Rams and Seahawks
