A father forced 6-year-old son to run on a treadmill. Days later, he left his child to die alone in a hospital (2 Viewers)

IMO instant gratification, a lack of critical thought, lack of respect and care for those around them, and egocentrism cause the largest amount of bad decisions.
I would beg to differ on the count that those criteria lead quite possibly lead to a good choice for the individual but a bad choice for those around that individual. For example, multi-billionaire CEO cuts workers wages, which results in a stronger bottom line for the company and a raise for the CEO, but negatively impacts the thousands who work for the company.

And it has been argued that decisions like that are short term that may be harmful in the long run. Plus I also mentioned lack of respect (consideration) for those around them.

However, cherry picking a hypothetical that applies to maybe .001% of the population doesn't mean it isn't true. There are a large number of articles in respected publications talking about how we have become more driven by instant gratification and egocentrism

Oh I get what you're saying. there's still a move to privatize a portion of social security. Pure stupidity. Most would lose everything in the stock market due to instant gratification and egotism, then look to the government for recompense.

I remember a saying that we all have the fundamental right to do whatever we want as long as we hurt no one else, but we have the fundamental responsibility to accept the consequences. I quote this as someone who has made more than his share of bonehead choices and is now living with those consequences.

What the FORK is wrong with some people??!!

An Ohio mom and her boyfriend have been arrested after her 6-year-old son was attacked by a pit bull while being restrained with handcuffs as a form of “corporal punishment,” police said.

Angelina Williams, 27, of Cleveland and her boyfriend, Taylor Marvin-Brown, have been arrested on separate charges of endangering children and obstructing justice, after police responded to a 911 call in the early evening of August 17 that a pit bull had “bitten a 6-year-old child on the neck and ear.”

Upon arrival, officials found the child in “serious condition,” and he was quickly flown to the hospital.

Robert Michalski, 47, who the sheriff’s office claim owns the dog that attacked the child, is also being held at Ashland County Jail on charges of endangering children and tampering with evidence…….

I’m rarely a “some people don’t deserve to live” guy but then I read stories like this

A California barber has been charged with murdering and torturing a 6-year-old boy by beating him with a piece of lumber after the child peed his pants, authorities say.

Ernest Lamar Love, 41, has been charged with murder, torture and child abuse causing death, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office said. He has pleaded not guilty to all counts, according to reports.

The incident happened on August 29 around 6:30 p.m., when Love was tasked with babysitting Chance Crawford, while his mother worked the night shift at a hospital.

Video surveillance shows Love walking into his barber shop with a large piece of raw lumber “with a reluctant Chance following behind him,” the DA’s office said.

Three hours later, at 1.30 a.m., Love allegedly carried the first grader — who was unconscious and struggling to breathe — into the emergency room.

That’s when doctors found injuries consistent with violent shaking, including flesh missing from his buttocks, exposed wounds, subdural hematoma and extreme brain swelling, the DA’s office said. The six-year-old also had a fracture on his shoulder blade.

Prosecutors accused Love of beating the first grader with the piece of lumber, then pouring hydrogen peroxide on the open wounds before forcing the boy to do push-ups, sit-ups, and jumping jacks.

Authorities said the barber was mad that the boy wet his pants while at a park in Placentia.…….

Where's the switch? I'll flip it to put this guy down. Some people don't deserve to live.

Again why can’t we kill these people?

I mean, I agree with the sentiment, but we still have a justice system and everyone, even the worst criminals are supposed to be afforded due process whether they deserve it or not. And the death penalty isn't legal in every state. It is what it is. I still would flip the switch on this guy because it's clear he killed this kid. But he still has to go through due process before I get to flip the switch.

I am good with that. I am for the death penalty but only in cases where it is undeniable. Caught on camera, numerous witnesses etc. Call it a red handed law.

Don't want to be the guy who complains about the journalism in such a horrific story but did anyone else find it odd that this monster was just referred to as a "barber"

Who is this guy and why was he 'tasked' with watching this kid?

Was he a family friend? A neighbor? Their barber? Has he watched the kid before?

Are the parents separated? Why wasn't the father the one watching his son?

Yeah, so many questions. Definitely have to consider whether there was some sort of negligence on the parents' part.

I honestly believe that if you are found guilty for harming a child (pedo, abuse, starving, or any of the extreme instances in this thread) that is how you should have to live the rest of your life. They should have to be brought to the edge of death and revived just to live it again the next day.

i have two major issues with these types of concerns
- the majority of our monsters are created - themselves were victims of horrible circumstance - so we're just punishing them for having someone else **** them up. That doesn't seem like a good behavior for a fair society. seemingly much better to try to intervene earlier, than just wait for bad stuff to punish
- punishment is a really ineffectual deterrent. Capital punishment seldom (if ever) lowers capital crimes (sometimes crime increase when capital punishment is introduced). And if criminal punishment was a net benefit for society, Louisiana would be the safest, most prosperous land mass in the world
So capital punishments impact is usually for the general pop to be fed the myth that we have some control over bad things happening. again, I think it would be better if we had a more mature understanding of human nature and society

The majority? I'm not so sure about that. Sometimes they're messed up by other people, and sometimes they get messed up of their own accord. And ultimately, adults have to be accountable for their own actions regardless of circumstances. There can be some mitigating factors, but that doesn't absolve responsibility.

It's really not a lack of understanding of human nature and society. It's more people having differing views about how to protect society and also justice. Punishment has never been about preventing people from doing anything, it's always been about repaying a debt to society and protecting society from people who would do harm. There may be an element of deterrence, but that's not the primary reason capital punishment exists.
