Adam Schefter: I expect the Saints to have some level of interest in Mike Vrabel [mod edit] (11 Viewers)

Joe Brady or Ben Johnson or Bust... Vrabel could come in with a broom for 2 seasons and clean up this mess... But he's not the long term answer to contention.

It will be very hard to have any hope for the saints if Mickey Loomis continues to make the important decisions.

We need to look for candidates for decision makers from teams with established cultures like yes, Green Bay, Pittsburgh or Baltimore.

We need people who can efficiently manage the cap and roster, not afraid of letting players leave because they are confident they already have cheaper replacements on the pipe.

We need someone that can identify leadership over scheme to be a head coach. A person who should build a school of coaches to be promoted once our coaches leave for promotions elsewhere.

Most of all, we need to get out of the charade that we are close, that we have a promising building block of young players, and that we have no problems managing our resources.

Time to move on!

It will be a tough go for whomever we hire. First you have a QB in Carr that you can't unload but isn't the long term answer. Then you have a couple young guys, or if you draft another in mid rounds, that will need playing time to see what you have. So QB is a major question mark.
It will be hard to get any FA to come here because of the salary cap and the QB dilemma. This will take a bit to sort out for anyone

Absolutely not. I rather go after a young rookie HC then sign another defensive mind HC. I said it before and I'm going to say it again, we do not have a very good track record when it comes to defensive mind head coach

Someone posted the following in another thread. They were right. There are only 32 of these jobs available. There
will be no shortage of qualified applicants.

“Qualified” is synonymous. By somes standards Dennis Allen was qualified, yet anyone with half a brain knew how that was gonna turn out. We very clearly watched Ben Johnson turn down the Panthers and others, opting to return to the Lions.

Smart coaches know they may only get one chance to succeed as a head coach, and will not want to take a job that puts them in position to fail like the Saints, Panthers, Browns and Raiders.

We often see coaches get a shot, fail, and never get a second chance.

This often leaves undesirable, or desperate for a chance type of coaches to take the head coaching jobs where the coach is setup to fail.

Really good candidates will wait for a good opportunity cause they know there will be new options every year. Which is exactly what Ben Johnson and Joe Brady did.

And make no mistake. Because of Loomis’ decisions with Dennis Allen and the cap, we are absolutely setting up the next coach to fail for quite some time.

The next head coach will decide the Loomis legacy. Was he a good GM or another Jerry Jones.

And he is a leader of men, I think he can whip this team back into shape rather quickly.
This team needs FAR more than leadership. Leadership doesn’t turn an old and depleted of depth roster into contenders

However, if I had to choose a defensive guy it would be Vrabel because right now he fits the mold of what we need for rebuilding

Throw a 5 year 50 million dollar deal at Ben Johnson and tell him he can do whatever he wants roster wise. Retool the current roster or tear it down and rebuild.
We should do that for whatever coach we hire.

Dan Campbell got a 7 year deal outright because of the work that had to be done to rebuild the Lions , if the Saints are serious about winning they are going to have to go after the best candidates and support the vision of the coach

I think last night showed the team needs a coach who can come in and install a positive culture. The Packers game was an embarrassment, really. So a full house cleaning is in order. If that is Vrabel so be it.

I think we can attract a good coach with the understanding that we know this is a long term project. He’ll need time to inject talent, build a culture, and get the cap in a better place. These next 2 seasons will be tough and ugly but as long as we’re seeing signs of improvement hell need to know that the team will stand by the coach as he rights the ship.

Vrabel led the Tennessee Titans to three straight playoff appearances during the 2019, 2020 and 2021 seasons. They advanced to the 2019 AFC Championship Game during that stretch that also saw Vrabel take home the 2021 Coach of the Year.
