Adam Schefter: I expect the Saints to have some level of interest in Mike Vrabel [mod edit] (11 Viewers)

Aaron Glenn would be swapping in Dennis Allen's secondary coach after firing Dennis Allen.

I'm sure Glenn has grown, but having the best offense in the league tends to help a defense. This team needs a full reset with a coach who can give it an identity to hang its hat on (i.e. a young offensive coach). Is Aaron Glenn's defense team-defining? I doubt it. No Payton/DA connections.

Vrabel led the Tennessee Titans to three straight playoff appearances during the 2019, 2020 and 2021 seasons. They advanced to the 2019 AFC Championship Game during that stretch that also saw Vrabel take home the 2021 Coach of the Year.
He also said he'd "chop off his (manhood) to win a title"...now that is commitment to winning.

Just for arguments sake, would you have taken Dan Campbell as HC?

I like Vrabel, but don’t really want a defensive minded head coach. He got lucky that Ryan Tannehill played out of his mind when he was looking to get a contract. The Saints have been putrid on offense for too long and have no QB. It doesn’t make sense to build a team with a defensive minded head coach in this situation.

Would you take Mike Tomlin?

Aaron Glenn would not excite this fanbase. Is he a culture builder like Dan Campbell and Sean? I think that would be a miss.

Vrabel...meh. We need a young, aggressive offensive minded coach like a Ben Johnson or maybe a Joe Brady but I don't think Brady is ready to step to that level.
Please, no Aaron Glenn. I want a clean start with no direct ties to either of the 2 previous head coaches.
AND...
Full disclosure here. Didn't like Glenn when he coached our DBs who for years could never get it into their heads to turn around when in coverage to avoid the many DPIs.

Throw a 5 year 50 million dollar deal at Ben Johnson and tell him he can do whatever he wants roster wise. Retool the current roster or tear it down and rebuild.
Ben would love that. He'd take that offer...straight to the Bears and use it as a bargaining chip.

I like Tomlin too and he’s better than Vrabel, but no not with the current state with a lack of QB. Go ask Steeler fans if they still want Tomlin and you’ll hear the same thing that he can’t get the offense right.

A defensive minded head coach needs a great QB period.

Meh, I rather Glenn he was respectable not special. Another lazy hire by Loomis.

And yet, he's got them on top of their division at 10-5 and has never had a losing season. Any Steelers fan who's saying that is out of their mind.

My point is that fans need to think beyond "Offensive head coach" and "Defensive head coach." Because most of the young guys getting hired in recent years aren't true head coaches. They're still glorified coordinators who contract out the other side of the ball, and they don't know how to manage a game or how to manage a roster. They just call plays and then stare into oblivion when the possession changes.

The HC's who win consistently may or may not call plays, but first and foremost, they know how to align a roster, lead a team, and manage a game. And they are a dying breed. Vrabel fits the bill. Ask Tennessee fans if they'd like to have him back.

Mike Tomlin is a great coach that will never be bad enough for the organization to draft a great QB. The Steelers have been stuck in purgatory for years now. Not bad enough to have a top pick and not good enough to do anything in the playoffs. If that’s what you want, then I understand. It is consistency after all.

Even an offensive minded head coach isn’t a guarantee at anything, but I still believe that gives you the best shot at developing a QB or getting the most out of subpar QB play.

The Bills and Chiefs both made the playoffs the year before they drafted Allen and Mahomes. They both identified their guy and took a shot to go up and get them. Sometimes you have to take a chance.

Surprising. I figured you for a “nothing related to Sean Payton’s tenure” kind of guy. Based on your posting his and post ratings.

I’m in the Vrable or Flores camp at the moment.

I agree and that’s an organization’s decision to make and by the looks of it the plan around here is to depend on FA QB/late round draft pick.

For all the trading up that the Saints do I still can’t imagine them trading up for a QB. They haven’t even taken a shot in the top two rounds for a QB since Manning. Loomis has only continued the trend with Garrett Grayson being the highest taken in the third round.
