Adam Schefter: I expect the Saints to have some level of interest in Mike Vrabel [mod edit] (10 Viewers)

Surprising. I figured you for a “nothing related to Sean Payton’s tenure” kind of guy. Based on your posting his and post ratings.

I’m in the Vrable or Flores camp at the moment.
I'm open for a real search, Vrabel is respectable I acknowledge that much but his record is not exceptional. Does he have ring ceiling?

I would be pleased if we are able to get Mike Vrabel.

He is still fairly young and he was successful in Nashville.

He’s my wish for our next hire. I want a “culture” type leader first and foremost. As others have said, someone that has vision and can build and then manage at an organizational level.

I would also love to have Ben Johnson, I just don’t think he’s a possibility for us.

Dear god no to a defensive coach

From legends to coaches who have their teams in the thick of the playoff race (Bill Belichick, Mike Tomlin, Bill Cowher, Pete Carroll, Sean McDermott, John Harbaugh, DeMeco Ryans, Dan Quinn)... the list is long of successful head coaches who come from the defensive side of the ball.

Seems the expectation here is to get another Sean Payton/Sean McVay/Andy Reid type, a HC who calls the offense; and that's why fans want OC's who are successful with their current teams. But remember, Ben Johnson is not the HC of the Lions. It really depends on who a head coach brings in to call the offense, if he doesn't do it himself.

I dont want to see anymore former head coaches. Im already traumatized after DA
With this train of thought, the Chiefs should have never hired Andy Reid after his stint with the Eagles. Let’s not penalize other former head coaches looking for their next gig because DA severely sucked at his.

That's a good point, however. That's a pretty high bar. His last three years weren't impressive. I think he could get the job done but ultimately it's the staff

This is a terrible comparison.

Dennis Allen was 8-28 when he was hired as Saints coach.

Mike Vrabel is 54-45. He won the NFC South twice, finished 2nd twice, 3rd once, and 4th once. He would two games in the 2019 playoffs as coach of the Titans.

They are very different coaches.

I like Tomlin too and he’s better than Vrabel, but no not with the current state with a lack of QB. Go ask Steeler fans if they still want Tomlin and you’ll hear the same thing that he can’t get the offense right.

A defensive minded head coach needs a great QB period.
Steelers fans are some of the most annoying and ungrateful fans you’ll ever meet.

Tomlin took over the Steelers in 2007. The Steelers have yet to see a losing season in 17 years, have 11 playoff appearances (looks like this year it'll be the 12th), been to 2 SBs and won 1.

Everyone needs a great QB.

The Steelers have been stuck in purgatory for years now.

More than half the NFL teams would love to be in that purgatory.

Ben Johnson or bust. He is the only coach I want. That signing would send a strong signal to the fanbase that they are serious about winning.

And yet, he's got them on top of their division at 10-5 and has never had a losing season. Any Steelers fan who's saying that is out of their mind.

My point is that fans need to think beyond "Offensive head coach" and "Defensive head coach." Because most of the young guys getting hired in recent years aren't true head coaches. They're still glorified coordinators who contract out the other side of the ball, and they don't know how to manage a game or how to manage a roster. They just call plays and then stare into oblivion when the possession changes.

The HC's who win consistently may or may not call plays, but first and foremost, they know how to align a roster, lead a team, and manage a game. And they are a dying breed. Vrabel fits the bill. Ask Tennessee fans if they'd like to have him back.
