Ads on mobile making forums almost unreadable (1 Viewer)

For anyone that's using Android (don't know if it's on iOS), a lot of browsers come with ad-blockers that cut out this type of stuff. Opera has a built in ad-blocker on their browser, for example. Or you could just download a separate one from the Play/App store.

Yes. It sucks. Makes the page unreadable. I just leave and come back another day. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it don’t.

There’s a discussion about this on EE
Andrus knows and is in touch with the ad people

Correct. Only, I haven't heard back from them since Friday. Last word was an exchange between the techs where one stated the following:

"I double checked and all the mobile specific slots for JP are disabled, could you please have another look? Apparently users are still seeing the creatives that interfere with the Forums".

I just emailed them asking if they were still working on the issue. EDIT - I received the following response:

BTW - I just got a response from the Ad people:

"Hi Andrus

Jennifer was working on it this morning. She will send an update in the morning.

My apologies for not updating you earlier.

Thanks "

This is the thread in question on the EE board:

I just surfed the site on my iPhone in Safari for about 20 minutes, and never got one. It has been about a month since I had been on the site from my phone. So it's an intermittent issue then?

Is there a Patreon set up for those who want to contribute monthly?
Yes there is. Just hit the "Subscriptions" link below the header.

Subscribing members are not served ads, and there are several other user friendly perks that come with being a subscribing member which you will find listed in the link. Plus, it really helps the site stay afloat.

I rarely promote it other than when we do a site fundraiser, but it's been about 3 or 4 years since we did one of those. I did one for my daughter when her spouse passed suddenly a couple years ago, which went very well, thanks to the generous membership here. However, we have had a rather large reduction in subscribers over the last few years, and really need to pick up those numbers, but I sure wasn't going to bother people during this Covid mess, and I really don't like bugging people for funding.

Anyone else having this issue where an ad takes up the entire mobile background of the forum, making threads unclickable?

It’s unbelievably annoying.
I commented on another post about it yesterday. SR, y’all can and will drive loyal readers and participants away with that stuff. 🤷‍♂️

And for clarification, I’m a publisher and have no problem with ads. They keep sites going. But it’s the new format that you can’t get around and make the site more and more often unusable that has started getting to me. That said, it hasn’t happened to me on this thread yet ... so far

I am completely aware of that. It isn't like I am doing it on purpose or even have any control over it other than to quit serving ads, but then this site would certainly go away. I can't go back to the first 12 years when I paid the entirety of the site costs out of my own pocket.

Believe me, when these unscrupulous advertisers inject these ads into our ad rotation I go into panic mode for that very reason. The people that serve our ad inventory are constantly fighting this issue. The perps are real slick about sneaking redirect ads into the inventory, and this thing happening now, which seems to be a new angle at serving intrusive ads to me.

What new format? You mean Xenforo vs. the old vBulletin?

I don’t know one format from the other as far as that. IT isn’t my thing. It has not happened tonight (much to my delight) ... but in recent days I’ve had to deal with large (long on a phone?) clearish/yellowish opaque ads that I couldn’t really read but couldn’t get through to actually read the thread. Is it my phone?(Like I said, I’m learning basic programing by necessity now at 57 years old. I’m an old print guy who had to adapt to survive). If tweaks have been made and that’s why it hasn’t happened tonight, you are, as you have been many times before, applauded.

It will kill them guaranteed

That works great. I am fairly sure some other site will ask me to enable JavaScript again later on, but i’m happy to leave it off until then.

And Andrus: Thanks for the Subscription reminder. I’ve been meaning to do it and certainly use the site enough to justify the cost.

Thanks!

Thanks again
