After 2 weeks, is the Saints secondary a concern? Ken Crawley in particular has (wrongly, imo) gained the ire of many Saints fans who are calling him to be benched. Are things really this bad, or are we just being extra petty as those of us in Louisiana are prone to being? I try to talk everyone off the ledge in this video.

Some notes:
-Week 1 was a disaster, for everyone
-Week 2 showed notable improvement
-Scheme/Coverages matter
-Still a lot of talent in the DB room

Good stuff.

Our defensive play call was to stop the 1st down and the Browns play call was to go for it all.
We're defending 10 yards from the LOS, they throw a 53 yard bomb.

Crawley had a tough choice to make and was pretty much where he was supposed to be.
Tyrod and Calloway made a perfect throw and catch.

Klein covered Jarvis Landry well.

One question... The Browns' running back in the flatat the bottom of the screen... who's respnsibility is he? I think that's Anzalone that looks like he wants to go out there and cover him, but pulls back for some reason. (or maybe the pass is already made???) Anyway, if we were playing to stop a first down, this would've been an easy throw for a first down.

Surely you're not indicating that all of the immediate, incessant, and uneducated "Hot Takes" have been inaccurate, are you?

One thing some fans are forgetting is that the offseasons is over. The free agent signing period, the draft, picking up other people's cuts, etc... there's nobody on the saints roster even close to Crawley. The closest is PJ William's. Our roster pretty much is what it is now. The only way to bring a cb in would be through a trade. And it's very doubtful we would find a cb a team would be willing to part with that would be better than Crawley. And even if there were... it would either cost us a premium draft pick AND some major LOOMISING to find cap room for.

The other option would be moving PRob outside which would probably be a mistake. We brought him in to be a slot receiver and that's working very well... dont mess with that.

I am NOT saying Crawley needs to go at all. I like our lineup as is and have complete faith that Crawley and the rest of our defense will come around. I'm just pointing out for the fans that want Crawleys head that, even if we wanted to, it would be next to impossible to replace him at this point.

On the touchdown play? Well, the responsibility is actually Lattimore's. They attack his zone with a hi-lo read there. Anzalone could shade close to Latt if no one comes into his zone though, but at that point the ball is coming out.

Crawley had a solid game. The bomb was less on him & more on perfect execution
It was a really good throw, and given how Hue and Co. have been it wasn't a bad bet to assume Cleveland would play it safe.

Are you trying to get me in trouble CW? I don't want any trouble :p

I was re watched that 4th and 5 bomb to Calloway. Gutsy call but the pass & execution was textbook. I underestimated the touch Tyrod has on those deep throws down the middle.

I always love your analysis, but I view the TD play differently. Williams failed to shade to the correct side. When the play snapped, he drifted 10 yards to his right to provide help to Lattimore. When he realized there were two deep routes to his left, it was too late. He should have recognized the strong side and stayed at home in the middle until the routes revealed themselves, most importantly because the strong side had the Browns' 2 best and fastest receivers. If he had, he would have had time to meet the deep route in the end zone. Maybe it was a bad play call. Maybe it was a bad read on his part. Either way, the safety was a non-factor on that play and that can't happen.

They are playing Tampa 2. He was simply doing his job/his assignment.

Nice review.

To me, Tampa 2 with a CB is not a prudent decision. It creates rotation issues.

Why do you think we have gone away from press coverage where we seemed successful last year?

Lol.

Nope. I’ve been here as long as Watt and idk if I’ve ever seen him not make this type of statement. No disrespect he’s one of the leaders as you know, and that’s his prerogative.
I think he may wear rose colored glasses which is his right. To fan as he chooses. As is everyone’s right. Some would call blind homerism an uneducated stance too. ?
As far as homers go Watt always comes across as intelligent, so there’s that. Lol.

And I say that as a casual fan now who hasn’t even watched the first two games.
?

That may be, but it's not important. For me, the focus should not be on Crawley, but on Williams' positioning and recognition of the routes. His job ... his only job ... given where he was at the snap, should have been cover the deep middle. Even if they called Tampa 2, he should have recognized the routes MUCH earlier. Just my 2 cents. I still think he is a phenomenal player. He's still learning.

Didn’t watch, correct me if I’m wrong, were we up by 6 at this point with time running down?
If so I’d play a soft shell cover 4 and allow nothing to get behind me. If we were only up three then my apologies I’m not thinking of the right play. Out of town so couldn’t watch.

I think it's a game by game thing and situational. I wouldn't be surprised to see them return to that against certain opponents.

Yup, you're in the right time frame. They were defending the market with 5 underneath (rushing 3). That cover 4 could have worked, but would have left "the hole" a little more open for attacking. Still probably a preferable result though. I personally would have been happy with a traditional Cover 3, maybe run C3 buzzi if you're worried about the middle of the field being attack for first down.
