All of Lou Hedley’s punts were inside the 20, three were inside the 15 (1 Viewer)

Shout out to Lou Hedley for a great game in field position. 2 fair catches, 1 downed, and a return allowed of 7 yards on 4 IN20 punts. He did a great job at directing the ball’s speed with the pace of his gunners, to an exact yard-line, for all of the punts to result in fair catches and minimal gain IN20.

Fortunately for the coverage unit, coaches don’t primarily evaluate punting by stat padding the most yards like we do as casual fans looking at individual yard stats in the box score. Instead, they measure punting overall by field position and return yards allowed for the team.

That first 36-yard punt was weak sauce. From the biggest Aussie punter fan fwiw.

He does well when we are near mid-field, but when you need a good punt from your own 25, he’s not good. His leg isn’t there.

Still think it’s a problem.
Agree, absolutely is. He can’t get the height or distance on the ball, the two biggest fundamentals for a punter.

Even his first punt was not good, it might have landed inside the 20 but it was a 30 something yarder. ‘Pooch’ punts he’s largely fine, but distance as you say is a problem. The offense was that good it wasn’t an issue today.

This is definitely the problem.

His specialty is those dead, end over end kicks which are great if have the ball at midfield or closer.

When he has to kick your team out of bad field position - he’s not nearly as effective. In fact, he’s pretty poor.

Solid punt result to the opps 19 for a fair catch. Gunners were in the returners face when it landed IN20 like the 3 attempts. There’s nothing else he can do.

He had a 62 yarder vs. Jaguars and three 50 yarders versus the Pats. We only focus on the yards but dead silent when he actually punts long ones often.

He’s a punter who focuses on directing punts to exact field spots for no advance more than padding yards.

Nope. A solid punt would have had the same result to the 7-10-yard line.
There’s no difference for the team if that punt landed at the 7-10 yard line and returned 9-12 yards to the 19. It dropped at the 19 and immediately fair caught because he punted for the gunners/team and not so much personal yard stats.

He’s not lacking in distance based on his punt logs in previous games. I think it’s challenging for most to measure him by field position than conventional stats.

He is a beast when punting in FG range.
Lol so Saints 36-49 yard line is FG range? Thats where he’s punting from most of the time. We should be sending Grupe out every time for 65-75 yard FGs then.

He can only punt from the yard line he’s given. I know it’s tough to look at him as a consistently great field position punter after we live and die by yard averages so much without yard line context.
