American Airlines CRJ-700 collides with helicopter near Reagan National (1 Viewer)

Yeah, it's only from the perception of the plane coming in seemingly slower for imminent landing and not having any idea where on the plane the helicopter hits it. But it SEEMS like it just covers a lot of space quickly.

ETA: But I'm not speculating either where the fault is. We don't know, for instance, if the plane was coming in on the correct runway.

ETA: Water temp estimated 37 degrees

I'd say the odds of the CRJ having any fault in the collision are next to zero. They're in the final approach on full ATC control in from Wichita - and the location is right in the flight path to runway 33.

I am just imagining being someone waiting at the airport for pick up of family, friends, whatever watching the board for a flight that's scheduled to land within minutes and all of a sudden you're in a completely different scenario

Yeah it’s just awful. I think they were 60 seconds or less from wheels on the ground.

I’ve done that very approach many times - the 33 runway from the south gives you the whole DC skyline if you’re on the right side. It’s a beautiful landing.

This is awful. Not sure if the air space wasn't being managed properly or what. But, my gut says the Blackhawk is at fault. We shall see. Terrible.

I've been mulling travelling out there, since my oldest step son is stationed at JBAB near there. Maybe not any time soon.

The only time I can remember flying out of there was on a Sunday several years ago after a particularly bad Saints loss (can't remember which game or year). I was wearing Saints gear and another dude getting on the flight was wearing Saints gear and we locked eyes and I was about to whip out a sad "who dat" but he cut me off before I got it out and just said, "Don't". lol I understood.

My only other National Airport story was before it was even Reagan International when we were picking up a friend's boyfriend and it involved Southern Comfort, getting lost in DC, needing to pee on the grass below Capitol Hill, and after finally finding the airport sideswiping the metal pole on the way into the parking lot. I think the boyfriend (poor Brian) ended up driving home once we finally found him .... somewhere in the airport (I think that whole trip would have ended up differently in a post 9/11 world).

Flying dark

I heard a claim it was a "training flight". My questions are, Why would it be "flying dark", period, on a "training flight" ... at 9 p.m. ... anywhere near a DCA runway (of course, also not knowing what its destination was).

Looks like last night’s report of four survivors was error.
