Andrus Peat starting at LT and Max Garcia starting at LG for second consecutive week (3 Viewers)

DA and Martine have done a good job finding and fielding a competent unit after their projected lineup failed miserably

Agreed, this unit is currently playing miles better than our original starting unit....They played well enough against the Jags for us to win that game as well.....Hopefully they will continue to improve.....we will see...

Because he’s horrible; it’s the only explanation.

I think we all need to understand just how bad a 1st round pick has to be for their team to bench them, especially for the types of players he’s being benched for.

The coaching staff wants badly to have this player on the field, trust me. But they have a lot more data on him than we do, including assignment execution and practice reps, and if they’re saying they can’t play him, the only conclusion we can draw is that the guy is just flat-out awful, worse than any of us realize.
It doesn’t say he’s a bust quite yet, he got benched for veterans w/ a better understand of technique.

that’s not uncommon

True. I think at a minimal though, it’s a sign that he won’t ever live up to first round value.

He may have a chance to become an average starter at some point, just not what you’d want out of a first round pick.

What happened with Cesar Ruiz is rare.

The new line up is why our O is executing better. Good job by the staff in NOT sticking with the failed line up.

Man… you guys are worse than the media with creating narratives.

The dude missed his entire rookie season and the entire offseason because of a couple injuries. Add that to the fact that he came from a super small and he is behind.

Hopefully, he develops the rest of the season and this offseason… I do agree that if he isn’t starting next year, we have a problem.

Saying Penning not starting by year 3 would put him in the "bust" category is a very reasonable take. I'm giving him a pass for this year and leaving open him starting at G. If he had a Brandon Scherff or even Peat like career, then fine. But if he can't get on the field due to lack of skill, then it's a bust.

Penning in year 2 and can't get on the field ahead of Peat and Garcia. Huge miss if not starting year 3.
I know he’s never played the position, but his biggest flaw is w the slower wide first step (kick step is what is called I think) on pass blocking plays that defenders seem to be able to destroy him on by either beating him w speed when it’s too slow or by cutting inside when he’s too wide, and he doesn’t have the skills to counter those moves.

Would those flaws in his skill set be negated if he moved to OG? I’m no blocking guru by any stretch (in fact I’m pretty ignorant to the ins and outs of OL tactics) but reports said he’s a mauler in the run game, so with all that combined, could someone more knowledgeable than me explain if he does or doesn’t have the skill set to be a better OG than OT? And do you think him focusing his energy there could be beneficial to us next year if we choose to play him at LG and we draft/sign a starting LT next offseason?

I need to put my glasses on. I read the thread title as “Andrus has started his escape to Maxico”, and I was thoroughly confused for a moment. :covri:

Paging @Belfast Saint ...

I have the same question about Penning.

I hope he is the starting LT moving forward. His position on this team always should have been left tackle. I wonder who thought that he could make the transition out of college from LT to LG?
Armstead at LT and his complete inability to play on the right side is what forced Peat to LG.

I still say put Penning at Guard. I don't think he has quick enough feet to ever be a tackle.
Penning was a 9+ in RAS, and the takes on him were how unbelievably athletic he was for a man his size. I really don’t think it’s a matter of him being too slow or unathletic to make it at LT… his technique is just hot garbage and because of that he is getting run over, beat around the edge, or flat-out blown back.
