It's certainly not tops in the league, but I don't anticipate it getting much better considering our salary cap situation and the much bigger needs that we have as a team.

what is the line of thinking about vilma playing inside? I thought he wasn't big enough to play the inside in a 3-4. sounds like a lot of fans want to put a square peg into a round hole.

Good player, but we're set at ILB with Vilma and Lofton. He wouldn't get playing time here.

Give me DJ williams, Larry Grant.

For ILBs you need either really fast guys who arrive at the ball with speed and viciously or you need big guys who will just plod guys when ballcarriers run into them.

If they're big, in weight, they also should be agile and tall enough to cover ground in their drop backs, zones, mans coverage etc.

I'd prefer the smaller, faster ones becasues they are usually better in coverage.

Fast Prototype, Willis and Bowman
Big Prototype, Steelers and Cowboys, gives like Bradie James, Larry foote, and for the old school people, Levon Kirkland.


Sadly Vilma and Lofton and neither big nor fast enough adn are prone to getting run over and beat in coverage. Add to this our horrific secondary led by safeties who have catastrophic problems in coverage and in tackling in run support and taking proper angles and we have a midline of hte defense, from ILBs to Safeties, that is setup for failure and abuse.

The fact that the Broncos still need a RB despite drafting one in the 2nd last year, and the fact that we probably will not retain Ivory anyway I would be willing to trade straight up Ivory for DJ.

This would not allow DJ to hit the market and it would get Ivory out of our conference entirely.

This is it in a nutshell. The center of your defense must be stout or you are done. If our NT, 2 MLB, and both safeties aren't up to the job no amount of scheming and plotting will matter. And, if last year is any indication, we are sorely lacking in all these spots. Lofton is the only one that is even serviceable at this point. We need help personnel wise and fast if we are even to be a top 30 defense, let alone top 20 or 15.

I seriously doubt vilma will play every down. I'd love to add him if he doesn't want too much money, unlike vilma he can be of use in the running game

It's Payton doing that. He was talking about how Vilma would fit in at WILB in our 3-4. We'll see what happens.
