Anyone miss Sean Payton now even the biggest detractors? (21 Viewers)

Parcells wasn’t a Giant forever.
Lombardi wasn’t a Packer forever.
Stram wasn’t a Chief forever.
Johnson wasn’t a Cowboy forever.
Shula wasn’t a Colt forever. (Pre Super Bowl championship)
Shannahan wasn’t a Bronco forever.
McCarthy wasn’t a Packer forever.
Holmgren wasn’t a Packer forever.

You can appreciate Payton. You can’t avoid talking about Payton because his shadow looks so large in the franchise.
But it’s time to move on and find the next 10-15 year HC.
This is a great point for everyone to consider. Sean didn't do anything that many successful coaches (in the modern era of pro football) hadn't done before. Yes, sometimes a coach with a measure of success has a few rough years and they are sent packing because the demands are now higher. But other times a good coach just needs a change of scenery and heads for some greener pastures.

Of all the Saints coaches, Bum, Mora, and Sean made the personal decision that it was time to leave. All the rest got pink slips. It's just extremely rare that any head coach (even the successful ones) spends his entire coaching career with one franchise. We just have to hope that the front office has the wisdom to fill the vacancy with a capable replacement without falling in love with him. Because successful or not, he's probably not going to be with you for much more than a decade. In that regard, Sean gave us more than most. Now it's time for Gayle and her henchmen to get it right when the football season begins anew in a few months. By the end of February we'll know how desperate they are at finding 'Mr. Right'.

I want to address Jack's list of coaches.

Parcells--friction with general manager George Young and lack of control over personnel decisions.

Vince Lombardi was only the general manager of the Packers when he accepted a huge contract to coach and be GM of the Redskins. He had stepped down as head coach the year before. Some burnout was a factor in stepping down as coach. But when he stepped down as coach and left as general manager, he also knew the team's arrow was pointed downward because of age and lack of young talent.

Hank Stram--fired.

Jimmy Johnson--broken relationship with the owner.

Don Shula--broken relationship with the owner.

Mike Shanahan--fired.

Mike McCarthy--contract not renewed by team.

Mike Holmgren--offered huge deal by Seattle.

In New Orleans, Payton was the de facto general manager and was loved by the owner. The Lombardi departure is analogous.

Yes but all good things must come to an end.

I just wish that our Saints star players and coaches could go out on a high note.

Payton = Left after a horrible 2021 season
Brees = Lost in the playoffs
Hill = Although a wait and see, could be done as a Saint by a torn ACL

None of them left on a high note.

So, yes, I miss Payton but he's gone and well, now the Saints are terrible again.........

There is a reason why I screamed til I lost my voice that Loomis should have gotten way more for Sean than he did. But he let his friendship override his responsibility to his team.
Yea I know Sean could have held out another year and we got nothing but should have called his bluff. He loved the Denver ownership and wanted back in badly. He would not have held out another year.

Exactly...we lost a HoF HC, an offensive minded genius, and all we got was Brian Bresse to show for it.

He was worth at least 2 1s. He was worth whatever we say he was worth and we let the whole world decide for us that he was only worth a late 1.

I absolutely miss him.... Mostly his "moxie" and his F you to the league attitude.... But as others have stated we need to move on.. I want another guy with that attitude

I want to know the real reason he left. There is something we don't know. He's hired a bunch of his old coaches, grabbed some of our players, seems like the same guy. We know he was trying to go to Miami the year he retired. What about the Saints made him decide to leave. I don't think it's the city, it's not the fans. I guess we'll have to wait for the book to come out when he's done coaching.

My feeling (I don't know, no one does except those involved) is that there was a power struggle between Loomis and CSP......and Gayle favored Loomis....just my guess, no hard evidence......

Of course I miss SP. I miss Brees, Colston, Deuce, et. al. We had a lot of great times and for me as a fan, it always felt like we had a chance to win under Coach Payton’s leadership.

I hope that our organization can get it together. I accept the fact that we’re just not good right now - we’re not, and it’s all inclusive: injuries, aging players, mediocre players, poor coaching, the whole lot. I also accept that we’re not going to be great every year, but I want to see the team get back to having a chance every year. I don’t want to become one of the franchises where we as a fanbase know we have no shot before the first snap of the regular season and yes, there are teams like that.

Just tired of being in the same place.

Like every thing in life it’s a combination of reasons. IMO, he felt that he had to win with his current roster. Then JW got hurt. So he’s staring at a losing season. In his mind, if he loses then his reputation will be tarnished and maybe he won’t get the big contract again from another team. That’s why he tried to force his way out to Miami with Tom Brady. Winning trumps all decisions. Because too many losses even at the most loyal place, will get you fired. Look at Pitt. Tomlin can truthfully say that he’s never lost there. Then you can say why did he go to Denver? Because he got his big deal. It’s all gravy now. But he’s a competitor so, he’ll try and win there too. And it looks like he will. Not shocked, he’s a great coach. Then why not stay in Nola? maxed cap, old roster, message getting stale, “not a lifer”, Bill went to multiple teams, too many feelings hurt having to cut the vets, leaving is easier than dealing with that.

If you're waiting to find out from Payton's book, good luck. We have his story--he was burned out and needed a break. And his last season was tough. But it was tough because the team was going south--no quarterback, overall talent down, recent drafts unproductive, horrible salary-cap shape. And Payton's fingerprints were on all of those issues. He got out because it made sense for him to do so and because he could.

What we have is just pure speculation, because no one on this board knows what really happened.....

The league's asinine COVID protocols also took a huge toll on CSP, something he was vocal about.

He simply needed a year off. He would have come back to NOLA if we would have taken him back, but that ship had sailed with our FO.
