Are we going to talk about that thing that no one's talking about (1 Viewer)

I don't call people bad words. Never have. I was raised by a woman who didn't like me to say the phrase "shut up" let alone swear because she was a lady. Now, I ain't no lady and, God knows, I can swear but I learned to not call people names. Both my parents were Republicans but I didn't learn ugly things from them. Didn't hear the "N" word at home or any other derogatory slang or hate-filled ideology against races or genders or sexual preferences or nationalites that I had to unlearn as an adult. I was taught, mostly tacitly, how to treat and regard other human beings so I just don't understand calling people names.

Not really sure how to take this.
All I meant is that it’s a useful exercise to really try to look inward in those situations, and try to identify the base emotion behind my reaction.

I have no idea what you personally were feeling when you heard that comment, so I’m not implying that you felt the same thing that I did. I do clearly remember what my immediate reaction was: “You elitist, out-of-touch *****!” Then, as a boy from Da Parish, I took a few beats to explore where that emotional reaction was coming from: childhood feelings of inadequacy; young adult doubts of my own worth and value; and early career imposter syndrome born in an environment amongst London and New York “elites”.

Once I identified that, the power of her idiotic statement over me was gone, and it was clear to me that the statement was solely a reflection of her, not me or the people and home that I love and care for. And THEN I reacted to it accordingly.

But no one’s talking about it
It’s implied in the thread title

People are doing the partisan dance and they don't even realize it.

Personally, I'm all for all political discussions being on this forum and just banning/suspending the bad actors. I enjoy good level headed logical discussions about world events that sometimes cross the line into politics.

But, that's not my decision, it's not my site, and I understand and respect why the decision was made. Having to babysit a bunch of people who can't control themselves is not something anyone should have to do on a site that was started to have fun and talk about football.

So, given that I think this attempt to have a veiled discussion is failing and is turning into exactly the partisan discussion it will inevitably become, I don't see this thread going anywhere but getting shut down. Because sooner or later someone is going to read all these veiled partisan positions and respond in kind but not so veiled.

You saying that because I'm Mexican?
Seriously, things have been a bit touch-and-go so far, but folks are trying. You are bringing a different vibe to the thread so perhaps you could back away at this point given your stated ambivalence toward it.

Yes, I fully expect it will get shut down, and likely soon. But let’s let the folks who wish to make the attempt to be civil do so, and others can just stay away.

Ah, okay, I get your angle now. I very much reacted to the word from the personal perspective that it was insulting the people I am related to, grew up with, am friends with, went to school with. And other than that, it was, as you said, reflective of it being elitist and myopically dismissive of the Americans in "flyover country". In other words, it was like a politician saying, Don't vote for me, I don't need your votes, when, clearly, you do.
